And Hashem said to Avram, get yourself out, from your country, and from your birthplace, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you." This is one of the ten tests with which Hakadosh Baruch Hu tested Avraham.

There would appear to be a difficulty here, for Hakadosh Baruch Hu promised him, "And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing" (Beraishit xii, 2), and Rashi explains: "Since travel causes three things - it reduces childbearing, reduces one's money and reduces one's fame - he therefore needed these three blessings, and he was promised regarding children, money and fame." If that is the case, then any person, even the most simple, would agree to leave his house and travel to a distant land in order to merit children after so many years of longing for a son, as "Avram was seventy five years old when he left Charan."

G‑d seals a pact with Abram, bequeathing the lands of Canaan to his descendants. Childless Abram marries Hagar and she gives birth to Ishmael. G‑d changes Abram's name to Abraham, and Sarai becomes Sarah. Abraham is circumcised at the age of 99.

THE SONG OF DEVORA

It was fitting that Devora should sing the song of victory over Sisera. DEVORA is from the root DAVAR, "word", as in DIBUR, "speech" (= Malchut, through which Godliness is revealed.) When speech rises to the level of song, speech is perfected through the musical notes of the melody (TA'AMEY HAMIKRA), which come from a higher level. Speech is from the Nefesh ego-soul (Malchut) while song is from the Neshamah-soul (Binah, Understanding). Understanding elevates speech.

JUDGES CHAPTER 3

The opening verses of our text paint a picture that is depressingly familiar to the modern Israeli. The generation that witnessed the heroic days of the miraculous conquest of the Land had passed, and a new generation arose that had not seen God's great work and they rebelled against Him (see Rashi on verse 1). Instead of enjoying peace and prosperity in the Land pursuing the Torah, they were forced to learn the art of warfare, just as in contemporary Israel, where the very flower of the country's youth are sacrificed on the altar of war.

THE BOOK OF JUDGES

The Book of Judges narrates the inner, spiritual history of Israel from after the death of Joshua until the very threshold of the establishment of the kingship by the prophet Samuel – a span of some four hundred years, in which the nation was largely without a single, unifying leader except at times when outstanding "Judges" – spiritual leaders of exceptional stature – arose to save them from their plight in face of their enemies. According to our rabbis, the Book of Judges was written by Samuel on the basis of "kabbalah" – i.e. the prophetic tradition handed down from generation to generation until it came to his teacher, Eli the High Priest (Bava Basra 14b; see RaDaK on Judges 1:21). The entire book can be seen as an intimate study of the developing moral sickness of the Israelites in their land that necessitated the establishment of the messianic kingship by Samuel.

The 613 mitzvoth are a basic cornerstone of Judaism. Maybe, from before Judaism, from the time of Yehoshua ben Nun and Moshe (some believe they were written on these stones):

Deu 27:1  And Mosheh, with the elders of Yisra’ĕl, commanded the people, saying, “Guard all the commands which I am commanding you today.

Deu 27:2  “And it shall be, on the day when you pass over the Yardĕn to the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, that you shall set up for yourselves large stones, and plaster them with plaster,

Deu 27:3  and write on them all the Words of this Torah, when you have passed over, so that you go into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ as יהוה Elohim of your fathers has spoken to you.

Deu 27:4  “And it shall be, when you have passed over the Yardĕn, that on Mount Ěyḇal you set up these stones, which I command you today, and you shall plaster them with plaster,

Deu 27:5  and build an altar to יהוה your Elohim there, an altar of stones – do not use an iron tool on them.

Deu 27:6  “Build the altar of יהוה your Elohim with complete stones, and you shall offer burnt offerings on it to יהוה your Elohim,

Deu 27:7  and shall offer peace offerings, and eat there, and rejoice before יהוה your Elohim.

Deu 27:8  “And you shall write all the Words of this Torah on the stones – plainly and well.”

Deu 27:9  And Mosheh and the priests, the Lĕwites, spoke to all Yisra’ĕl, saying, “Be silent and hear, O Yisra’ĕl: This day you have become the people of יהוה your Elohim,

Deu 27:10  and you shall obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim, and do His commands and His laws which I command you today.”

JOSHUA CHAPTERS 23-24

With thanks to God we can justly feel gratified that we have today reached the concluding chapters of the book of Joshua and can make a SIYIM (the happy "completion" of an entire book or tractate, which it is a mitzvah to mark with a festive meal and a LECHAYIM toast). This first SIYUM comes only two weeks after beginning our one-year cycle of study of NaCh, proving that regular daily study produces results. It does not matter if on some days we were less attentive than we might have liked or if we have forgotten some or even much of what we read. Everything is registered in our souls and in Heaven, and next time around we will catch what we missed this time. The overall gain from studying a whole work and seeing the wide picture far outweighs any loss that may result from not paying attention to every little detail.

JOSHUA CHAPTER 21

CITIES OF THE PRIESTS AND LEVITES

Following the establishment of the cities of refuge for unwitting killers (Joshua ch 20), the next step in laying the foundations for a truly Godly society in the Holy Land was to set aside special cities up and down the country for the Levites and the Priests, as God had commanded Moses (Numbers 35:1-8).

Under Torah law, those who had a special responsibility for maintaining the spiritual bond of the people as a whole with God were not a group of democratically-elected or self-selecting religious leaders. Rather they were a hereditary caste consisting of the entire tribe of the Levites, of whom one family in particular – the descendants of Aaron – were set aside as Cohanim, the priests.
