The weekly Sfas Emes is now available in a Sefer. The Seferis called Emes Ve'emunah : A Sfas Emes Companion. This Sefer contains all of the materials in the weekly emails, plus new insights. The Sefer also contains the text in lashon hakodesh on which the Sfas Emes worked to produce his ma'amar. Accessing the the Sfas Emes via the Sefer offers advantages. You have the week's Torah without having to print the email. You have the Sfas Emes' text--which could not be sent by email. Also many people who would enjoy the Sfas Emes do not have internet. You can purchase this Sefer at your favorite bokstore, or online, at the Targum or Feldheim websites. Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.
Parshas Vaeschanan
Sfas Emes, Zechuso Tagein Aleinu, Parshas Va'eschanan, 5631 & 5639

This parsha begins with Moshe Rabbeinu davening to HaShem. So it comes as no surprise that the first paragraph of Medrash Rabba on the parsha focuses on the subject of tefila (prayer). So, too, the Sfas Emes also concentrates today on the topic of prayer.

A friend with a secular orientation once asked me, "Rabbi, considering the size of your family, wouldn't you agree that your children's emotional well-being would be compromised by the addition of yet another child?"

I explained to him that it depends on one's perspective. We can view each child as a liability that could potentially deplete our parental reservoir, or we can look at the infinite richness each one contributes to the family, and ultimately, to the world at large. With this perspective, the parents' joy, far from diminishing with the birth of an additional child, becomes all the greater.

EZEKIEL CHAPTER 3

We read at the end of the previous chapter how a hand spread forth a scroll before Ezekiel, "…and it was written inside and outside, and in it was written lamentations and mourning and woe" (Ez. 2:10). Targum (ad loc.) renders: "…And written in it was what happened from the beginning and what is destined to happen in the end, and in it was written that if the House of Israel transgress the Torah, the nations shall rule over them, but if they practice the Torah, lamentations, mourning and woe shall depart from them."

Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

EZEKIEL CHAPTER 1

Ezekiel's prophetic ministry commenced a few years prior to the destruction of the First Temple and spanned a period of over twenty years. Ezekiel received Torah from the prophet Jeremiah, and there is a tradition that he was actually his son and was called "the son of Buzi" because people despised (BUZ) Jeremiah (RaDaK on Ezekiel 1:3 in the name of Targum Yerushalmi). The opening prophesy in the book of Ezekiel, which came to him in Babylon, is dated to five years after the exile there of King Yeho-yachin (v 2). This took place eleven years before the destruction of the Temple. Ezekiel went into exile with Yeho-yachin together with sages and prophets like Daniel, Hananya, Mishael, Azariah and Mordechai. It is surmised that Ezekiel began to prophesy prior to leaving the Land of Israel, in accordance with the principle that the Shechinah does not rest upon a prophet outside the Land unless it first rested upon him in Israel (Moe'ed Katan 25a). Some hold that Ezekiel's first prophecy is contained in chapter 2, while others hold that it is in chapter 17 (Rashi on Ezekiel 1:3).

UNIVERSAL TORAH: VO-ESCHANAN

By Rabbi Avraham Greenbaum

Torah Reading: VO-ESCHANAN, Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11.
Haftara: Isaiah 40:1-26.

"AND I TRIED TO INGRATIATE MYSELF."

In the opening word of our PARSHAH of VO-ESCHANAN, Moses tells how "I tried to ingratiate myself" with G-d -- elicit His favor -- praying repeatedly to be allowed enter the land of Israel, "Eretz HaTzvi", the "Land of Beauty, the graceful gazelle", and come to the place of the Holy Temple. The Midrash teaches that in order to try to revoke the decree against his entry to the land, Moses prayed no less than 515 prayers -- corresponding to the gematria (numerical value) of the word VO-ESCHANAN. The root of this word is CHEN, meaning the "grace" that is bestowed by G-d as a gift of pure love and kindness. The grammatical form of the word is HISPA'EL - reflexive: the person praying must WORK on himself or herself in order to become open to that gift. The parshah is a call to us to the inner work that must be combined with our Torah study: the work in our heart and soul to open ourselves to G-d's grace -- through meditation, contemplation, prayer and refinement of our traits. We must try and try again and again!!!
