Under God's Control
When you go to war against an enemy, and you see horses, chariots, and a nation that outnumbers you, do not feel intimidated . . . (Devarim 20:1)

While doing research on the last 2,000 years of anti-Semitism for a project of mine, I noticed a somewhat frightening pattern. In some periods of history over the last two millennia, anti-Semitism has basically been non-stop; only recently, has it slackened a bit so that Jews are treated, for the most part, as equals, at least in some parts of the Western world. Anti-Semitism will never go away completely before the Messianic Era, but in some parts of the world, it has become submerged—for the time being.

Yeshaya 51:12
This week's haftorah reveals to us another impressive dimension of our final redemption. The haftorah begins with the words of Hashem to the Jewish people, "I Myself am the one consoling you." (51:12) The people were informed that Hashem would personally comfort them and return them from exile. Hashem continues and says, "And I am your Hashem ....who will firmly establish you. Say to the inhabitants of Zion, 'You are My people.'" (51:16) These passages reflect some hesitation on the part of the Jewish nation to return to Zion. There seems to be a serious concern in their minds regarding the permanence of their return. They have experienced several returns in the past which were not enduring and they question if this one will be any different. To this, Hashem responds that He will personally bring them back to Zion guaranteeing their everlasting return.

The weekly Sfas Emes is now available in a Sefer. The Seferis called Emes Ve'emunah : A Sfas Emes Companion. This Sefer contains all of the materials in the weekly emails, plus new insights. The Sefer also contains the text in lashon hakodesh on which the Sfas Emes worked to produce his ma'amar. Accessing the the Sfas Emes via the Sefer offers advantages. You have the week's Torah without having to print the email. You have the Sfas Emes' text--which could not be sent by email. Also many people who would enjoy the Sfas Emes do not have internet. You can purchase this Sefer at your favorite bokstore, or online, at the Targum or Feldheim websites. Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.
Parshas Shoftim
Shoftim 5631/5635

This parsha begins: "Shoftim ve'shotrim ti'tein le'cha be'chol she'areetcha asher HaShem Elo'kehcha no'sein le'cha ..." (ArtScroll: "Judges and officers shall you appoint in all your cities [literally, gates] which HaShem, your God gives you ..."). The Sfas Emes tells us that his grandfather had his own way of reading this pasuk. The Chidushei HaRim would focus on the phrase " ... the gateways that HaShem, your God, is giving you ..." He would then comment that the Torah here is telling us a basic -- but often forgotten -- fact of life. We should keep in mind that the gateways -- she'arim -- that permit access to HaShem are themselves a gift from Him. Like any gift, this access to HaShem should not be taken for granted.

Blueprint for Utopia
In this weeks Torah portion, the Torah commands us to appoint a king over the Jewish nation. Living as we do in a society that values the freedoms of our democratic tradition, we tend to take a dim view of the concept of monarchy.

The idea of a ruler invested with unlimited power is anathema to those of us raised in a social order in which egalitarianism is one of the supreme values. Indeed, the very mention of absolute monarchy conjures up dark images of citizens living at the mercy of selfish, totalitarian rulers. The Torah introduces us to a vastly different type of monarch, one who is forbidden to engage in self-aggrandizement or excessive acquisitiveness. The Jewish king "shall not multiply his possession of horses, nor shall he take too many wives, lest his heart turn astray. Nor shall he hoard silver or gold, the Torah commands.

BS"D KNOW YOUR BIBLE: Ezekiel 41-42
Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

EZEKIEL CHAPTER 41

The Hebrew text of Ezekiel's account of the Future Temple – which will be the earthly representation of the Heavenly Temple – is necessarily opaque because is simultaneously a detailed description of a highly complex physical structure and a garb clothing the deepest secrets of God's names and attributes and His government of the world. The classical Biblical commentators on our text (Rashi, Metzudas David and RaDaK) discuss at length the literal meaning of the words and phrases making up Ezekiel's description of the physical structure of the Future Temple but hardly enter into Midrash and do not touch at all (at least openly) upon its deeper meaning.

The only comprehensive discussion of the latter with which this author is familiar is that of the kabbalistic genius Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chayim Luzzatto 1707-47), who side by side with his MISHKNEY ELYON on the kabbalistic meaning of the Temple also provided "Five Chapters" in the style of the Mishneh clarifying its dimensions and physical form on the basis of Ezekiel's text. My dear friend Rabbi Abraham Rokeach, who is a Talmid Chacham, an authority on the forms of the First, Second and Future Temples and also a building engineer by profession, has told me that from the engineering point of view, it is Ramchal's explanation of the physical structure of the Future Temple that makes the most sense.
