"Rise and go up to the Place"

(Deuteronomy 17:8)

This week's Torah reading of Shoftim contains many, many commandments, all of them having to do with communal life and responsibilities, the vast majority of them having to do with civil issues: Our portion opens with the command to appoint judges who will judge and officers who will see to it that the judgment is carried out: "Justice, justice shall you pursue" (Deuteronomy 16:20) Torah exclaims! Torah then deals with the responsibility of the community at large to deal properly with those who seek to lead their neighbors away from Torah principles and commitments.

In Parshat Shoftim we find commandments addressed to the general populace, which bear on the life of the nation when it is fully engaged. Four national foundations are detailed: the Torah ("Judges and officers you shall appoint for you in all your gates..." xvi, 18), priesthood ("And this shall be the laws of the priests from the people..." xviii, 1), prophecy ("I will establish a prophet for them like you, from amongst their brothers..."xviii, 18), and kingship ("and you say, 'I will appoint a king over me...'" xvii, 14). Our teacher and master HaRav Tzvi Yehudah Kook based his lectures on Parshat Shoftim on this issue. When we return to our land, and return to live a national life, we must clarify these issues thoroughly in order to establish the nation on holy foundations, for only thus can the nation actualize its Divine function.

BS"D KNOW YOUR BIBLE: Ezekiel 45-46
Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

EZEKIEL CHAPTER 45

"And when you divide the land by lot for inheritance…" (v 1). As Ezekiel's vision of the "Final Settlement" moves towards its conclusion in these final chapters of his book, he now begins to set forth the way in which the Land of Israel will be apportioned between the Temple, the Priests, the Levites, the Nasi and the Twelve Tribes of Israelites at the end of days.

The opening section in our present chapter (verses 1-7) deals with the Temple compound, the territories of the Priests and Levites and those of the Nasi. Following this section, the prophecy digresses to subjects mostly relating to the Temple services before returning to the subject of the boundaries of the Land and its apportionment among the Twelve Tribes from ch 47 v 13 to the end of the book.
