Parshas Balak Did Bilam’s Ason Survive? Do Angels Read Minds? The ason saw me, and turned from before me these three times. Perhaps she turned because of me. Now, I would kill you, and keep her alive. Did the ason live to tell (figuratively, of course) her story? Rashi doesn’t think so, but there may be another way to looking at the pasuk more favorable to the animal’s longevity. Her life span hinges on the word ulai, which usually means “perhaps.”

When Bilam reaches Balak he travels with him - "...and they came to Kiryat Chutzot" (xxii, 39). Afterwards, "And it was in the morning, Balak took Bilam, and he took him up to Bamot Ba'al, and he saw from there the edge of the people" (41).

When Bilam blesses Israel instead of cursing them, Balak says to Bilam: "Please come with me to another place...and curse them for me from there. And he took him to Sedeh Tzofim, to the top of Pisgah..." (xxiii, 13-14). On the third occasion Balak takes Bilam "to the top of Pe'or, which looks out over the Yeshimon" (28).

II CHRONICLES CHAPTER 22

The alliance between the House of David and the house of the wicked Ahab king of Israel almost led to the extinction of the royal line of David after the death of King Yehoram of Judah, son of King Yehoshaphat, which we read about at the end of the previous chapter (II Chron. 21:19-20). In retribution for Yehoram's leading Judah into idolatry, an invading army of Philistines and Arabs had captured and apparently killed all his sons and wives, leaving only his smallest son Yeho-achaz (ibid. v 16-17). When Yehoram died at the age of forty, the people of Jerusalem chose Yeho-achaz (also called Ahaziahu and Azariahu) to succeed him.

II CHRONICLES CHAPTER 20

A LESSON IN ISRAELITE WARFARE

The story told in our present chapter appears only here in Chronicles, with merely the faintest reference to it in the parallel account of the reign of Yehoshaphat in I Kings 22:46. This in no way diminishes the great significance of this story as a teaching about the proper way for Israel to react in the face of attacks by their enemies.
