In last week’s letter we covered most of the “devices” that are in the armory of the Holy Spirit.  But before continuing, there is one more among those “tools” that I want to focus on, and that is “prophecy.”  Upon hearing this word many feel ill at ease or are even put off, as it is perhaps the most misused, abused and misunderstood of all the gifts of the Spirit.  The apostle Paul emphasized the importance of this gift in the following words:  “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy…For he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men” (1 Corinthians 14:1, 3).  Let us look at each of the last three terms a little more closely.

Mishpatim! - This coming Shabbat, Friday February 17, 2012, the Torah portion will be Parashat Mishpatim, which extends from Exodus 21:1 - 24:18.  The Haftarah reading is Jeremiah 34:8-22 and 33:25-26.  You can download the lesson as a PDF file, WORD file or as a PDF Children's Lesson.  It's been a long time since I've written a short article and I really feel moved to write about the topic known as "The Sacred Name".  I'm sure many of you have wondered if we need to speak "The Sacred Name" or not and hopefully, this will give you some guidance.  I'm looking forward to getting that to you soon and pray that Adonai will lead me in my thoughts.  May all of you have a wonderful Shabbat!

"These are the ordinances" (Exodus 21:1) Shvat 24, 5772/February 17, 2012 Just before the revelation at Mount Sinai, Moshe Rabbenu - Moses our Master - was working day and night, sitting in judgement before the people. The entire nation would approach "his honor" with problems great and small. Moshe's father-in-law Yitro saw right away that such a system was unsustainable. Neither Moshe nor the people could suffer such a situation for any length of time. Moshe needed help and the people needed shorter lines. No sooner had Yitro made his proposal to reform the judiciary by training judges and establishing separate courts, than Torah makes an abrupt switch.
