Introduction What is the source of Joseph’s greatness, that he should be the one who follows Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as the bearer of God’s covenant? The key lies in two qualities that drive the narrative of this week’s Parashah. The first is Joseph is ”a powerful and careful listener.” There is another important point to be seen here. When Joseph offers to interpret the dreams of the cupbearer, baker, and Pharaoh, he immediately disavows special skills – his ability to discern the meaning of their dreams comes from God.
Joseph firmly believes, as he tells his brothers when he finally reveals himself, that his exile in Egypt had a lrager purpose, to preserve the family that will become the twelve tribes of Israel. The strength of his sense of Hebrew identity and the willpower to maintain it, to raise his sons with it despite being in an entirely Egyptian society, that is the quality that makes him a fitting recipient of the covenant.
