Rosh Chodesh Adar

Pssst! Want some good advice? If you're looking to get a glimpse into how G-d created the world, don't begin by reading Genesis, chapter one. Oh, it's a beautiful description of the first six days of creation and the sabbath that followed. But if you're looking for insight into how G-d did it, and why, that's not the first place to look. The first place to look is in this week's Torah reading of Terumah, (Exodus 25:1-27:19). Parashat Terumah describes the building of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. We are taught by Midrash that the Holy Temple, (and its prototype, the Tabernacle), was in G-d's thought, as it were, even before creation was begun.

Plague after devastating plague, G-d wreaks unspeakable havoc upon Egypt, leaving no stone unturned as He shows Pharaoh who's the boss. In the midst of this unravelling of the warp and woof of creation, why does G-d give to Israel the sighting of the new moon as the first commandment for them to perform?

Pharaoh employed sundry stratagems to uproot and destroy the children of Israel, chillingly reminiscent of recent and contemporary programs to annihilate Israel. Yet, despite it all, Israel abides. But why did G-d put Israel in Egypt? What was the Egyptian exile all about?

His brothers were in shock when Yosef said "I am Yosef," thereby removing from their eyes the blinders preventing them from seeing G-d's presence in every moment and in every action. So startled were they that they could not respond, they could not comprehend. Their souls left them. How much greater would be the shock were G-d to reveal His presence to us in one single moment. Therefore He reveals His great light one glimpse at a time, even as the Geula redemption marches ever forward.

"And Yaakov was left alone"

(Genesis 32:25)
Kislev 11, 5772/December 9, 2011

On the eve of his reentry into the land of Israel, Yaakov avinu, (Jacob our forefather), finds himself alone. In this state of nighttime solitude he wrestles with a man until "the break of dawn." (Genesis 32:25) The two struggle throughout the night and as the morning light begins to appear, and as it becomes clear that Yaakov's mysterious interlocutor neither can prevail over Yaakov, nor can he linger past the dawn, he tellsYaakov, "'Your name shall no longer be called Yaakov, but Israel, because you have commanding power with [an angel of] G-d and with men, and you have prevailed.'" (ibid 32:29)

"And you shall rejoice in your festival"

(Deuteronomy 16:14)
Tishrei 14, 5772/October 12, 2011

This will necessarily be a brief newsletter. The fact is we are simply way too busy with preparations for Sukkot,  (beginning Wednesday evening). The four days which separate Yom Kippur from Sukkot enjoy their own unique status. Sweet and sublime. They are different from any other day of the year. Following the intense drama of Rosh HaShana, in which we declare unequivocally G-d's kinship and sovereignty over all creation, and the supreme exertion of Yom Kippur, in which we transcend our own imperfections and return to the person G-d intended us to be, the four days leading up to Sukkot are filled with a lightness of spirit and a unity of purpose.

Weekly Torah Portion: Shoftim

Can we do תפילות prayers for:

The Temple Institute? That also through them The האור Light, רפואה The Healing and The ואהבה Love of ישועת יהוה Yeshuath YHWH may come back to הארץ The Land of Israel?

As Moses continues to flesh out G-d's plan for a Torah based society in the land of Israel, one thing becomes crystal clear: The Holy Temple from which shines forth the Divine presence, (Shechina), is the light and the source of justice - how we treat our fellow man, and worship - how we stand before G-d. We cannot achieve justice between men if we do not stand before G-d, and we cannot stand before G-d if we do not seek justice between men.
