What is Shabbat Shalom?

Jews all over the world read a portion of the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, in the synagogue every Shabbat morning.  The cycle begins right after the Feast of Tabernacles and concludes the following year at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles.  Traditionally, Jewish families discuss the Torah portion at their Shabbat Table, bringing new insights, each year, to the same inspirational words and stories that they have been reading for years. In this weekly column, Sondra Oster Baras, CFOIC Heartland's Israel Director, shares her personal reflections on the weekly Torah portion.

Vayishlach (and he (Jacob) Sent)
Genesis 32:4 - 36:43

This week's Torah portion begins with Jacob's preparation for his confrontation with Esau. He has just returned from years in the home of his uncle Laban, he has four wives and 12 children, a great deal of sheep and other animals, but he remains concerned as to whether Esau is still intent on killing him. He prepares for war, but, concurrently, sends messengers with gifts and prays to G-d for salvation.

Interestingly, the episode is ripe with messengers and angels. And most interestingly, the messengers are sometimes referred to as angels (Genesis 32:4) and the angels are sometimes referred to as men (Genesis 32:25). It is the angel that intrigues me most.

Jacob has successfully transferred his entire entourage across the River Yabok and is the only remaining one on the eastern side of the river. At that moment, a "man" accosts him and fights with him all night long. When the "man" realizes he will never defeat Jacob, he injures Jacob's thigh and then begs Jacob to release him. Jacob, realizing at this point that the man is actually an angel, demands a blessing. The angel then informs Jacob that his name will be changed to Israel.

The changing of a name is something that we have seen before, when G-d changes Abram's name to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah. In both cases, G-d adds letters to their names that are often used as abbreviations for G-d's name and, in changing their names, identifies them with special roles. Abraham will be the father of all nations and, indeed, is the first patriarch of the Jewish people.

Isaac's name is not changed, but G-d is the one who commands his name at birth (Genesis 17:19). Jacob's new name, Israel, also contains G-d's name (El) and the reason given for his name is that he has fought with gods and with people and has prevailed.

The Midrash explains that the angel which confronts Jacob is actually the angel of Esau, his spiritual representative. The conflict between Jacob and Esau is represented in the spiritual realm as the struggle between Jacob and the angel, which Jacob wins. Jacob then goes on to prevail in the natural, as well, when Esau accepts Jacob's offer of peace. Esau also accepts Jacob as the heir to Canaan and the blessings of Abraham, and returns to his own home in Seir. (Genesis 33:16)

Each one of the patriarchs are ordinary, though righteous people who are selected by G-d to fulfill a special role in the development of the Jewish people. They are responsible for birthing the nation that will be G-d's chosen people and that will serve G-d and fulfill His commandments. When G-d names each of them, His puts His stamp upon them and appoints them to their leadership role.

As Jacob returns from Laban, as the father of the children who will become the Children of Israel, he is ready to be appointed to his patriarchal role. But first, he must prove his ability to defeat Esau. For Jacob is the last of the patriarchs and the only one whose entire progeny become the nation of Israel. Jacob and his children will face many enemies over the centuries, the prototype of which is Esau. There will be spiritual warfare involved as well. If Jacob can defeat his enemies, he will truly be fit to birth the nation of Israel. And Jacob's preparations to defeat his brother, mirror the elements that remain at our disposal for defeating our enemies, even today: war, prayer and gifts. Yes, we can be generous to our enemies if it will buy us peace. But not at the expense of our identity. Not at the expense of being Israel and of inheriting the blessings of Abraham, the nation of Israel and the Land of Israel. "And Esau returned that day on the way to Seir. And Jacob traveled to Succot...And Jacob arrived complete to the city of Shechem in the Land of Canaan." (Genesis 33:16-18)

Another Opportunity Missed
Jacob may now be free of Laban, but in the end he may find that Laban was only practice for the real trials that would seek to destroy not only him, but the plans the Almighty had for his life. First on the list was his brother Esau. It was a meeting that Jacob would have preferred to not attend, but in the end he came out of it at least with all his pieces and parts still intact.
Now it is time for the final part of the journey. He is going back home! All of his enemies have been put defeated and he is free to walk into the Promised Land with his head high, wives, the slave girls, a small boat load of children and possessions too numerous to count. Well, not so fast. There are still a few small items that have never been dealt with.
We begin chapter 35 with HaShem telling Jacob that it is now time to cross the borders and go back home. Jacob turns to his family and gives them some instructions before he prepared to enter. On top of the list is to get rid of any false gods they have with them. How does he know there are false gods in the camp? Does he know that it is Rachel that has them? Has he known all along that she had stolen them from Laban and has them to this day? These are all questions that we can ponder at this point, but they are questions that will be made clear in the coming verses.
In the final steps of the journey, Rachael goes into labor. It is recorded as a hard labor, one which would take Rachael's life. She lives long enough to hear that the child is a boy and she calls him, "Son of my grief." There can also be another translation for the words she spoke on that day though. They can also be translated, "Son of my idolatry."
Within the last words she spoke, Rachael may have come to the place of finally admitting the secret life she had lived since leaving her father's house. In those last moments, maybe with Jacob standing right there, she was admitting that the words of her husband just days before to put away her false gods had been words meant for her. She would understand that she had been given a last chance to repent and had refused. Her life would come to an end, because she never let go of Plan B. Her life had been a mixture of faith in the gods of her father Laban and the God of her husband Jacob. The mixture of lukewarm living would keep her from the Promised Land.
Jacob would change the name of the child to Benjamin which carries the meaning of "son of my right hand" or "Son of my strength." But what was it about this child's birth that would cause Jacob to think of strength. Was it the strength he had received from Rachael through the years? Could it have been that he received strength on this day because in his heart he had always known that Rachael was divided in her devotion to him. Did he see in this moment that her outward beauty had been a deception? Had knowing about those false gods and not dealing with them literally been a drain on him, both spiritually and maybe even physically? Of course these are questions of speculation, but I think they are worth some thought.
Now just before we become so enamored with the possible failure of Rachael, let us turn the account and allow it to become a mirror for our own lives. How does the death of Rachael speak to us.
It takes no thought at all to know that I believe we have something in common with Jacob here in that we too are preparing to go back home. That thought, together with the fact that the Torah was written as an example to us, brings the question, "Would we also be receiving instructions the same as Jacob did long ago?" Would the words of getting rid of our false gods before we can enter in be words we should allow to examine and convict our lives?
It is doubtful if anyone reading this commentary actually has little idols around their homes like Rachael did. False gods though come in many forms. To find them we must first define them. Simply put, a false god is anything you turn to instead of, or as you are, turning to YHVH. A false god can be within a statement such as, "I am upset, I am going to see a movie so I can calm down!" Nothing against movies is implied here, but rather I use this as an example we do not think of right away. False gods can of course be a hidden bank account or that hundred-dollar bill you tucked away without telling your spouse, you know, for that 'just in case' moment. False gods can be pills that keep us from dealing with life. They can be children whom we worship and adore, status in our congregation, our dream house, a retirement account and the list can go on and on. It is not that there is anything wrong with many of the above mentioned things, but we must make sure they never take a place in life in which we rely on or place them above Yah.
It all comes down to this, "What do we have in our lives that will cause us to come up a few steps short of His full promises?" Is what we have hidden in the closets and drawers of life going to be the very thing that kills us in the end?
Rachael was given an opportunity to repent. She passed on it till the very end when it was too late. I believe the same warning is going forth today. Let us be a people who learn from history instead of repeating it!
Shabbat Shalom,
Mike

  STICK WITH YOUR LIFE ASSIGNMENT

http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0PDoTDcOuJMOSAABSGjzbkF/SIG=12cttocu8/EXP=1289981020/**http%3a/www.goldcoastafrica.com/catalog/images/607238.jpg

I tell you, God will see that things are made right for them. He will make sure it happens quickly. "But when the Son of Man comes, will he find people on earth who have faith?" Luke 18:8

Shabbat shalom dearly beloved!
It is during times of great testing that we realize what “we are made of”. By that I mean that we are made out of CLAY, out of DUST. And it is at that time that we are forced to make choices that can affect our lives and the lives of millions.  When  Shaul (Paul) was challenged with great trials he realized that he was a weak vessel made out of clay. It was that realization that made him the powerful Apostle that he was!
But we have this treasure in earthenvessels that the excellence of the power may be of God Go to fullsize imageand not of us. 2 Corinthians 4:7
It is only when we realize how frail we are that we can really be strong, not in our power but in His! However when we realize how weak we are there is a serious temptation to run away and to quit! It is at this time that we must humble ourselves as low as we can in order to acknowledge that we cannot really be faithful and win the race of faith without Him. He is a compassionate High Priest and if we ask for help in time of need, He will not deny us! Maybe the help will not be the one you planned on but His help is always perfect and ON TIME!
He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Hebrews 5:2
Y’shua is also “subject to weakness?” Can you imagine the Master, the God of the Universe  “subject to weakness?” But He was made a human vessel, a Vessel of Clay! He will forever make intercession for us as a MAN as the Last Adam! He knows what it means to be tempted to the limits! He experienced that in Gethsemane,
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." Matthew 26:39View Image
It was His example of submission to Abba in Heaven at times of impossible to describe anguish that is a beacon of light before us! We will all have to go through anguish at times and we will all have the choice of asking for “the cup of sorrow” to pass, but as we do, let us not forget the last part of Y’shua’s prayer,
Not as I will but as You will!
It is that part that made the difference between Him staying a normal man on earth or fulfilling His Calling as the Messiah, the Saviour, the Redeemer! Had He quit at that time all of history would have been changed forever! It is honest to ask for the “cup to pass”, no one enjoys hardship and sorrow but honesty is not enough. We must have FAITH to succeed. In this case the FAITH that I am talking about is not the one that moves mountains and does great miracles. That is a Gift of Faith and is wonderful! But the kind of faith that I am talking about is actually DEEP TRUST in YHVH come what may. You could also call it “blind trust”. For at the time that you choose to trust in Him and abandon yourself to His Perfect Will in a hard situation, you will not be able to “see clearly” before you TRUST.
It is this kind of Faith that leads people to become FAITHFUL and fulfil their assignments in life. And this kind of Faith or “blind trust” comes with COURAGE and SELFLESSNESS. That is Messiah’s Character, the one we can draw on when extremely challenged!
Blessed is the man who keeps on going when times are hard. After he has come through them, he will receive a crown. The crown is life itself. God has promised it to those who love him. James 1:12
In Hebrew the word for faith and faithfulness is from the same root, that root is AMEN! True faith, causes us to walk in “blind trust” and to AMEN Yah’s Perfect will even when we do not understand it. Then we will stay on course, and faithful to Him and to our life assignments to the end and will receive His CROWN of LIFE, we will rule and reign with Him!
'Don't be afraid of what you are going to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you. You will be treated badly for ten days. Be faithful, even if it means you must die. Then I will give you a crown. The crown is life itself. Revelation 2:10
AN EFFECTIVE PRAYER
Adonai help me to have courage to believe and trust you even if I can’t see clearly, and help me to be selfless to obey you and finish my life assignment when I am most tempted to be http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0WTefWfQ.JMRhwAsdOjzbkF/SIG=12n73j6es/EXP=1289983263/**http%3a/fumosh.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/ist2_109270_blindfold.jpgSELFISH and run away!
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done." Matthew 26:42
Had Y’shua ran away in Gethsemane, you and I would not be saved! In the same way EVERY person that quits their life assignment because of lack of faith and trust, fear and selfishness especially in the midst of hardship will affect millions of people! It is like a Domino effect!
And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Messiah may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 2:9
May you trust Him against all odds and FINISH your life assignment!

About The Commentaries

Traditional Judaism follows a yearly Torah and Haftarah reading cycle in which the Torah (the First Five Books of Scripture) is divided into weekly portions that have an accompanying excerpt from one of the Prophetic books that relates to the theme being presented.
As Believers in Messiah Yeshua, we also include portions from the New Testament, so that we will be reading form the whole counsel of our Father's Holy Word.
Each of these portions contain several chapters. Since each parashah contains untold numbers of nuggets of truth, it is impossible for any one person to present all of the truths in one weekly volume. As we go through the annual cycle, we find new, encouraging, and inspiring bits of truth. Each commentator brings different aspects to light, and we encourage open discussion on biblical passages, and thus the views expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Messianic Israel Alliance or its members and affiliates.

The Identity of the Bride up to the Torah
The Identity of the Bride up to the Torah

We just prepared a new book, based on our Yeshiva study Chayyeh Sarah. You will discover what the Torah and Jewish sources teach about the Bride. Following is an excerpt that also comments the story of the cave of Machpelah, marriage in the Torah, and other themes developed in this particular portion of the Bible:

 Choosing Rivka
Genesis 24:12-14  Then he said, "O Lord God of my master Avraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Avraham. Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, 'Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink'-let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Yitzchak. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master."
Q: What qualities is Avraham's servant looking for?
Rivka is acting this way:
Genesis 24:18 -20 So she said, "Drink, my lord." Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink. And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, "I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking." Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water,
and drew for all his camels.

 Rivka has a heart like Avraham, the same family characteristic as him: hospitality, a heart turned towards others, and eagerness to serve his neighbor!
During the last lesson, we have seen that G-d was seeking to form a nation established on justice, charity and love of one's neighbor, for practicing hospitality and love meant knowing Him.

 One of the main characteristics of the Bride is her heart: she loves serving and understands the needs before they are mentioned:
Genesis 24:17; 19-20 And the servant ran to meet her and said, "Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher." And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, "I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking." Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
"The world is based upon three things: Torah, worship, and the practice of loving acts." Pirkei Avot1:2

 She fulfills the commandments (the ten camels) of the L-rd for the purpose of the Torah is to love one's neighbor as oneself:
Matthew 22:37-40 Yeshua said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it:  'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Torah and the Prophets.
Genesis 24:58 Then they called Rivka and said to her, "Will you go with this man im haish hazeh עִם-הָאִישׁ הַזֶּה?" And she said, "I will go."

: The last letters of the words "with this man im haish hazeh עִם-  הָאִישׁ הַזֶּה" spell the word "Moshe מֹשֶׁה" who gave the Torah to the Jewish people.
 All this can be achieved only through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit who works in a truly circumcised and surrendering heart.
 Rivka, symbol of Israel and of the House of Judah, gives water to the ten camels representing the scattered Ten tribes who must come back to drink from the sources of the Torah.
Eliezer was successful in his mission. Through Rivka, G-d provided a wife for Yitzchak corresponding to the vision of Avraham; as his physical and spiritual relative, she too longs for this vision.
Like Avraham, she would leave her country and her family to follow her mission.

 The Presents
Genesis 24:22 So it was, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden nose ring weighing half a shekel beka בֶּקַע, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels of gold.
The presents offered by the servant to Rivka project this vision before her eyes and urge her to leave immediately to join her promised husband. The presents were not very valuable for a man as rich as Avraham but they had a great prophetic meaning:
 The half shekel represented the half shekel each Jew would later give for the census:
Exodus 38:26 a bekah the head beka lagulgolet  בֶּקַע לַגֻּלְגֹּלֶת -- half a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed the numbering from twenty years old and upward, [of] the six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. (DBY)..."

The Identity of the Bride up to the TorahBuy Now

Our last book has now been translated into English and Dutch now!   It is a strong prophetic message that sheds light on the rise of Islam and the solution HaShem has planned to fight it.

We are at the dawn of the 21st century, 2,000 years after the coming of our Master Yeshua and the world is on the road to ruin. While the Church should be strong after these centuries of practice, we witness the rise of a conquering religion, entering with power in all the civilized Christian countries to subjugate and submit men and women to an iron yoke. What are the reasons for this spiritual war and why does G-d allow Islam to conquer the Western world? What are the secret agreements concluded by our governments to give access to mass immigration for Muslims in Europe and in the United States? We will try to answer these questions in part, in this study based on the sacred texts of the Word of G-d and certain Jewish sources.

He speaks; who will listen to His voice?

You have two possibilities to study: Complete training with graduation or Personal enrichment.
The Complete training will allow those who want to teach Torah to be part of our network of Torah teachers, who desire to start a Yeshiva in their home or at their kehila. Sukkat David will offer help to those who want to initiate Torah study groups.

Take the opportunity to study Torah starting with the highly prophetic Book of Genesis. Torah is the key for the end times; everything has been written in it. We just need to dive into it and receive tremendous revelations on Yeshua and His plan for our lives.

From the beginning of the messianic calling of the first Patriarch, the Torah teaches us that faith is the key to salvation. Grace also has been present since the beginning.
The foundations are laid from the first Book of the Bible, to help us understand the perfect plan of salvation that G-d has for mankind. If one doesn't study the foundations of this plan a great part of the Revelation is lost, notably, the Revelation of Messiah Yeshua.

Receiving Him in our heart as Savior and Master is one thing, one first necessary step for our salvation, but our path doesn't stop there. After Pesach (salvation by grace), we must head to the Festival celebrated in honor of HaShem, "three days walk" after the reception of the Torah: Shavuot. Avraham saw the L-rd, and the story of his life and of his descendents reveals His Presence, even from the beginning.

The same way we have received the Savior in our hearts,  it is now about receiving His Torah engraved in our hearts, even as proclaimed by the prophets in Jeremiah 31:31.  True new birth takes place by the action of the Ruach HaKodesh, who circumcises our hearts to be able to walk according to the criteria of holiness of Elohim.

But in order to be able to walk in these commandements, under Yeshua's yoke, we need to know the Word. When did G-d speak, before the eyes and to the ears of all, with the sound of thunder, setting ablaze an entire mountain? The answer is obvious: the Creator of the universe came to reveal His heart at Mount Sinai, a place that didn't belong to anyone,  and that was open freely to all those who wanted to drink the waters of life.
Yeshua manifested Himself on that day at Mount Sinai, but only Moshe could see Him. Moshe's skin shone so intensely that he covered it with a veil. He shone from the initial Light of Creation: the Light of Messiah. He is the PURPOSE of the Torah; He fills us with His love and calls us to follow Him, to prepare a heavenly Bride.

He left us these words: John 5:45-47 But don't think that it is I who will be your accuser before the Father. Do you know who will accuse you? Moshe, the very one you have counted on! For if you really believed Moshe, you would believe me; because it was about me that he wrote. But if you don't believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?

Indeed, if we don't believe the Torah of Moshe, how will we believe the words of Yeshua? They are the same, only revealed to our  understanding, because the veil was lifted.
By studying the Torah, our intimate knowledge and revelation of Yeshua grows.

Don't stay at the stage of Pesach and salvation by grace; move on to the stage of priesthood! He is preparing the Kingdom of priests for the Glory of G-d the Father!

Yaakov and Esav
Shalom,
This week, the Parasha tells us of the definitive establishment of the Twelve Tribes in Eretz Israel and of the separation of the two brothers Esav and Yaakov. Esav, who represents the Catholic Roman doctrine will "leave" Israel  and go to Seir.
Descendants of Edom will be kings and chiefs even before the sons of Israel.
The eight Edomite kings mentioned will be followed by eight Israelite kings, from Saul to Yoram.
Amalek, sworn enemy of Israel is born: he is the fruit of an incestuous union between Eliphaz and his daughter Timna who was also his concubine. He will do what is possible to later prevent the Bnei Israel to enter the Promised Land after their coming out of Egypt. He will continue during history to oppose the calling of the Chosen people and still today, we can hear in the mouth of the pope, the representant of Rome, that there is no more chosen people. If there is no more chosen people, there is no more right to the Land of Israel neither for the Jewish people. And this is total contradiction with the Word of G-d.

The Midrash concludes the Parasha with a parable that Yeshua resumed:
"The wheat, the straw and the stubble engaged in a controversy. The wheat said: 'For my sake has the field been sown'; and the stubble maintained: 'For my sake was the field sown.' Said the wheat to them: 'When the hour comes you will see.' When harvest time came, the farmer took the stubble and burnt it, scattered the straw, and piled up the wheat into a stack, and everybody kissed it. In like manner Israel and the nations have a controversy, each asserting: 'For our sake was the world created.' Says Israel: 'The hour will come in the messianic future and you will see how Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away; but as for Israel -And thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel'."
Isaiah 41:15-16 Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth; You shall thresh the mountains and beat them small, And make the hills like chaff. You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away, And the whirlwind shall scatter them; You shall rejoice in the Lord, And glory in the Holy One of Israel.
Read Matthew 13:24-43

Our Savior has confirmed that the Kingdom of G-d will be for those who are part of the "wheat."
Matthew 13:41-43 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness anomia anomia transgression of the Torah, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

May we be part of it! Study Torah at the Distance Messianic Yeshiva and discover how to become this wheat.

ChanukkahWe entered the month of Kislev, the month of the Light. We encourage you to get a copy of our last study on Chanukka; a challenge for the Greek mindset! You will be transformed by this teaching!

Excerpts of the Book:
Meaning and celebration of the Feast of Chanukah, The victory over darkness!
Chanukah means "dedication". The word also means to educate, to initiate.

Although this feast is not a Biblical one, its significance is very important and represents the spiritual warfare between the Light of the Torah and the darkness of a world without it.
The story of Chanukah commemorates the victory of the Hasmoneans over the Greeks and the Jewish independence in Israel which started with the purification of the Temple and the restoration of G-d's worship.
On the 25th of the month of Kislev, Judah Maccabee, the leader of the revolt, rededicated the Beth Hamikdash (Temple) and lit the golden menorah. But only one pure olive jug was found and the menorah was to burn non stop day and night. Acting out of faith, the Hasmoneans lit the menorah and the oil lasted miraculously for eight days, the time needed to prepare some new pure oil.  The feast of Chanukah was established in order to celebrate this miracle and the victory of the Torah over the darkness of the Greek thinking.
A few points are necessary to understand here:
Judaism assimilates Greece to one of the four exiles the Jewish people went through, the three others being: Babylon, Persia, and Rome. Those four exiles are linked to the first words of Bereshit (Genesis):
The earth was unformed and void darkness וחשwas on the face of the deep תהום, and the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water. Genesis 1:2

Greece is linked with darkness. Darkness because of the attempt of the Greeks to destroy the soul of Judaism by "converting" the Jews to Hellenism, forbidding the reading and teaching of the Torah, the practice of circumcision, Shabbat and new months celebration and forcing the new Jewish brides to sleep with a Greek officer before the wedding day defiling the holiness of marriage and family.
The Greeks, under the rule of the terrible Antiochus IV, who was called Epiphanies ("the Splendid One", and also "divine manifestation"), defiled the Temple, offering pork to sacrifice on the altar and defiling all the olive oil jugs for the lighting of the golden menorah.

The menorah was the symbol of G-d's light in the Temple, shining day and night and the purpose was clear:
To prevent G-d's light to shine and testify of the Truth.

The corrupted Greek world was still at that time the super power, and its goal was to Hellenize the rest of the world through the Greek culture, language and customs. A lot of those customs were deeply pagan and impure with no place for holiness.
It is interesting to note that G-d had given the gift of art, and aesthetics to the descendants of Yefet through Noach 's mouth:
May God enlarge Yefet; he will live in the tents of Shem, but Kena'an will be their servant. Genesis 9:27

Yefet, in Hebrew means "beauty". One of his descendants was Yavan (Genesis 10:2), which means Greece in Hebrew. According to the Talmud, this verse means that the gift of beauty and arts that was given to Yefet must dwell in the tent of Shem, which symbolizes the spiritual values. No beauty if it is not to glorify the Creator.

Athens was the capital of modernism; everything was made for the sake of humanism, personal achievement, beauty of the body, pleasure of the eyes and the flesh that finally lead to corruption.

Jerusalem was the spiritual centre of the world, and represented G-d's wisdom, the Temple was testifying the presence of G-d, the shekhina on earth.

The Greeks did not want to physically destroy the Jews, like Haman or Hitler wanted to do, but to capture their mind and change their worldview.
The Jews then didn't have any choice: resist or die. The ones who compromised lost their identities and became corrupted.

Today our western world has inherited much from Greek thinking and Shaul (Paul) was already warning us to be careful:
In other words, do not let yourselves be conformed to the standards of the 'olam hazeh (this world) Instead, keep letting yourselves be transformed by the renewing of your minds; so that you will know what God wants and will agree that what he wants is good, satisfying and able to succeed. Romans 12:2

In the Renewed Covenant (NT) we see a mention of this commemoration:
Then came Hanukkah in Yerushalayim. It was winter, and Yeshua was walking around inside the Temple area, in Shlomo's Colonnade. John: 10:22-23

No wonder why He was there for the Feast of the Lights, which this celebration is also called. The menorah speaks of the wonderful light He brought to the world and to our lives:
Yeshua spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light which gives life." John 8:12

This message is very relevant for the  Body of Messiah today. As the olive tree that cannot be easily hybridized and its olive oil mixed up, we need to watch the purity of our source of inspiration and ligth the Menorah of G-d's Word with pure oil, sanctified with His Spirit. We must never forget that even as Yitzchak never left the Holy Land having been consecrated as an holocaust for G-d, we also will never fully receive the revelation of Yeshua without understanding the role of Yisra-El in the plan of Redemption through Torah which speaks of Him:
For if you really believed Moshe, you would believe me; because it was about me that he wrote. But if you don't believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"John 5:46
