Rosh Chodesh Adar

Pssst! Want some good advice? If you're looking to get a glimpse into how G-d created the world, don't begin by reading Genesis, chapter one. Oh, it's a beautiful description of the first six days of creation and the sabbath that followed. But if you're looking for insight into how G-d did it, and why, that's not the first place to look. The first place to look is in this week's Torah reading of Terumah, (Exodus 25:1-27:19). Parashat Terumah describes the building of the Tabernacle in the wilderness. We are taught by Midrash that the Holy Temple, (and its prototype, the Tabernacle), was in G-d's thought, as it were, even before creation was begun.

Dear,

Our weekly video blog-magazine from last week continues this week, but with a slightly different format. Instead of connecting all the segments into one long video, we are dividing them into separate youtube videos to help you find your way around.

Moses thoughts of Aaron quickly gave way to the path ahead of him. It was all he could do to keep from breaking out in a full run regardless of his age. He wanted with everything within him to be back in the presence of Yah.

Shalom Fellow Israelite Warrior,

Last week’s letter ended with… “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in Elohim for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Messiah” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 emphasis added).  Thus far we have been concentrating on our non-carnal weapons, that is, on our spiritual cache.  This week we are going to start looking at the enemy’s camp. What are the above mentioned strongholds of the enemy, where are they and how did they get there?

Shalom!

Did you ever work at a tedious job and wonder if the Father was trying to teach you something?  I know that the Father has chosen the concepts of agriculture as a way to teach us Kingdom principles.  So, when I found myself alone for hours on my hands and knees in the dirt, on a cold morning with the ruach (wind) blowing briskly, I looked for the lesson.

Put the Torah in Your Terumah
God told Moshe, “Tell the Children of Israel that anyone who desires to bring to Me an elevated-offering should do so.” (Shemos 23:12)

The Ba'al Haturim points out an interesting gematria that I certainly would never have through of myself. He explains that the word terumah — elevated offering — is comprised of the word Torah, and the letter Mem, representing the 40 days that Moshe Rabbeinu was on Har Sinai receiving Torah. Hence, the ultimate elevated offering: The Learning and performance of Torah. I’d like to adapt this explanation in a way to explain, in current terms, an ancient idea: yiddishe nachas.

In this week’s parashah, we begin to read about the design and construction of the mishkan / Tabernacle. R’ Menachem ben Meir Tzioni z”l (Speyer, Germany; 15th century) quotes the kabbalistic midrash, Sefer Ha’bahir, as follows: The structure of the mishkan parallels the creation of the world. We read about Creation (Bereishit 1:1), “In the beginning of G-d’s creating the heavens . . . ,” and regarding the mishkan G-d said (Shmot 26:7), “You shall make curtains of goat hair for a covering over the Tabernacle.”

The Symbol of the Tabernacle
The detailed description of the dimensions and materials of the mishkan/tabernacle as listed in this week’s parsha must contain great cosmic, if murkily unknown importance. The question of the purpose of these myriad details being included in the Torah has been asked by all students of the Torah over the ages. While the answers advanced have also been many, few of them have been truly satisfactory. The matter remains a mystery.

Sfas Emes, Zechuso Tagein Aleinu, Teruma, 5631

The Sfas Emes begins by citing the first Medrash Rabbah on the parsha. That Medrash poses the following question. How can one ascertain the nature of a given business deal? (The transaction that the Medrash has in mind is our acquiring the Torah from HaShem.) The Medrash answers: to know the nature of a transaction, look at the commission that the broker received for intermediating it. In the case of the Torah, we can learn about the transaction by considering the commission that Moshe Rabbeinu earned for brokering our receiving the Torah from HaShem. In fact, Moshes 'commission' was truly extraordinary. When we accepted the Torah, Moshe Rabbeinu's "panim " (face) glowed (Shemos, 34:29). Moshe Rabeinu's panim shone with such radiance that Moshe had to wear a face-covering when people wanted to talk to him.

M'lochim 1 5:26
This week's haftorah teaches us an important perspective about the Holy Temple and our synagogue. The haftorah opens with a detailed account of Shlomo Hamelech's construction of the Bais Hamikdash. He engaged nearly two hundred thousand workers in hewing and transporting scarce heavy stones for the Bais Hamikdash's foundation. He built its exterior walls from perfectly hewed stones from the quarry that did not require any cutting or planing. He enhanced the basic structure with numerous chambers, annexes and winding staircases and paneled the entire structure with impressive cedar wood.

Shabbat Mishpatim-Shekalim 5772  Thursday, 23 Shevat 5772 - Feb 16, 2012

Dear,

I have been eagerly looking forward to sharing Gal Einai's new (God willing) weekly video blog-magazine with you.

For many years, we have wanted to share with non-Hebrew speakers and novice Hebrew students, the incredible breadth and beauty of the Torah taught by Harav Ginsburgh. Normally, though, the weekly class, and other opportunities in which the Rav speaks, are too long and pose too great a challenge for many.
