General Overview:

This week's reading, Acharei-Kedoshim, begins with a detailed description of the service of the High Priest on Yom Kippur. Dozens of commandments are then discussed in this week's reading. Among them: the prohibitions against offering sacrifices outside the Temple; consuming blood; incestuous, adulterous, or other forbidden relationships; various mandatory gifts for the poor; love for every Jew, prohibition against sorcery; honesty in business dealings; and sexual morality.

Tour with Beit Orot
Parshat Emor begins with laws that are unique to cohanim. The cohanim must avoid tum'at met (impurity from the dead), and there are certain women that they may not marry. The Torah calls upon the rest of Am Yisrael: "You must [strive to] keep him holy, since he represents the food offering to G-d. He must be holy, since I am G-d - I am holy and I am making you holy" (21:8).

"I shall be sanctified amidst the children of Israel."

(Leviticus 22:32)
Iyar 11, 5772/May 3, 2012
Twenty seventh day of the Omer

Do you remember how the book of Leviticus opened? "And He called to Moses..."(Leviticus 1:1) We are not told who "He" is until the second half of the verse, "...and HaShem spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting... " (ibid) The great sage Rashi notes the unusual Hebrew wording in the verse, in which the word "called" is used instead of the standard "spoke" which Torah commonly employs when G-d is speaking to Moshe. Rashiunderstood this unique phrasing as suggesting that G-d spoke in a voice that only Moshe, and no one else, could hear.
