Parshas Devarim
Shabat Outweighs the Ninth Day of Av
This year the Shabat on which parsha of Dvarim is being read publicly in the synagogue is itself the ninth day of Av. There are differing customs as to how to treat this Shabat and whether any restrictions whatsoever should pertain to our usual Shabat pleasures and enjoyment. Even though the prevailing custom is to treat this Shabat in the usual and normal fashion, the parsha of Dvarim all by itself is sufficient warning to sober our attitudes.

Editor's Note:

When I think of summer, I think of parks, ice pops, beaches, vacations, swimming pools, barbecues, sprinklers, music, day trips and lots of happy children. And much of the Northern Hemisphere is enjoying all that right now. We were too—until recently.
Smack in the middle of the summer, we mark the saddest period of time on the Jewish calendar. We remember the destruction of the Holy Temples and the subsequent exile in which we still remain. We limit our fun, our eating and our grooming. We are in mourning.
This seems to be a recurrent theme in Jewish life. When a couple marries, the groom breaks a glass under the wedding canopy to remind us of the Destruction. When building a new home, many leave a patch unfinished, again to remind us of Jerusalem's ruin.
Perhaps the message is, "As good as it seems, don't get too comfortable. Our bodies may be okay, but our Jewish souls are horribly misplaced. We belong in Jerusalem, at home, at peace and at one."
With the 9th of Av right around the corner, let's remember why we're here and where we wish to go. If we add just one more mitzvah to our daily doings, perhaps we'll finally get there.

BS"D KNOW YOUR BIBLE: Jeremiah 51-52
Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

NOTE: With thanks to the Creator of the Universe, we today complete our study of the book of Jeremiah. In preparation for the fast of Tisha B'Av (July 29) commemorating the destruction of the Temple, we will for the next two days (July 26 & 27) study Eichah (Lamentations), which is customarily read on that fast-day. No email will be sent on Tisha B'Av itself, but on the following day (July 30) we will with G-d's help begin our study of the book of Ezekiel.

JEREMIAH CHAPTER 51

The previous long chapter about the destruction of Babylon is now followed by an even lengthier chapter continuing with the same theme.

V 1: "Behold I will raise up against Babylon and against those that dwell in Lev-qamay, a destroying wind…" The commentators point out that LEV-QAMAY, which literally means "the heart of those that rise against Me", is made up of the letters corresponding to KASDIM (=Chaldeans) in the AT-BASH cipher (where TAV stands for ALEPH and SHIN for BEIT etc.)

The Daily Zohar is published and sent out to you when the first light appears over the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. This is the best time to connect to the energy of Chessed that comes from the place of the Holy Temple and inject it into the Daily Zohar that you read below.

Judaism: Light of Torah from Efrat: Matot-Masei

How can the Torah command us to kill men, women and children of the seven peoples in Canaan? Dvar Torah from Efrat in the Judean Hills.

"And they (the Israelites) set their legions against Midian as the Lord had commanded Moses and they killed every male." (Numbers 31:7)
Our Biblical portion of Matot opens with God's vengeance against Midian, an avowed enemy of the Israelites who had joined Balak the King of Moab in the hiring of Balaam to curse Israel.
