"And I will bless them."

(Numbers 6:27)
Sivan 11, 5772/May 31, 2012

Parashat Naso, (Numbers 4:21-7:89), picks up where Bamidbar leaves off, with a description of the preparations being made by the Israelite encampment in anticipation of entering into the land of Canaan. Not only logistical preparations are being made, such as the division of labor among the Levites, but also preparations of a societal-spiritual nature are being made.

How do we make a bridge between common thinking that the earth appears millions or even billions of years old and The Torah which says man is only a few thousand years old. Time as we know it has changed through history and could be the key to bring the two understandings together as one. Levi-like Actions
In Parashas Emor we spotlighted the Kohanim. In this week’s parshah, we will take a closer look at the Levi’im, even though once they were the source of the Kohanim. However, that too is indicative of the essence of the Tribe of Levi.

Out Of Control
"...Any man whose wife goes astray..." (5:12)

From the juxtaposition of the section discussing the Priestly gifts to the laws of the Sotah, a woman suspected of infidelity, the Talmud derives the following: The consequence of a person refusing to give the Kohein his tithes is that his wife will be suspected of infidelity. He will, thereby, be forced to turn to the Kohein to perform the procedure of the "bitter waters", which will clarify whether he may resume relations with his wife[1].

Tanach: Tehilim 73-74
Mishnah: Yevamot 9:2-3
Daf Yomi (Bavli): Niddah 12
Daf Yomi (Yerushalmi): Yevamot 1
Halachah Yomit: Orach Chaim 61:5-7

Our parashah opens: “Take a census of the sons of Gershon also.” Why “also”? R’ Avraham Saba z”l (Spain; 1440-1508) explains that Gershon was the oldest son of Levi, and his descendants had a claim to be counted before the descendants of Gershon’s younger brother Kehat. Since the family of Kehat was already counted at the end of last week’s parashah, our parashah says, “Take a census of the sons of Gershon also.”

A Little Peace in Our Time
(Insights from this week's Portion: Naso)
Hi All – the title of this article is derived from my friend & partner Aryeh Cohen's beautiful, stirring song “A Little Peace in Our Time” (not to be confused with the fateful, naively optimistic words “peace for our time” by Neville Chamberlain, who – notwithstanding his good intentions – somehow became convinced that he had made a lasting peace with Adolph Hitler). During The Chevra's Israel Trip in '07, while standing on a rock at a military outpost overlooking Gaza, Aryeh resoundingly belted out this song towards Gaza itself. I wasn't sure whether to run for cover or sing harmony (I think I did both) – but I was sure that it was quite a powerfully moving experience.

Have a Wonderful & Peaceful Shabbos! Love, Jon & The Chevra

Parshas Naso
A Song Missing a Note1
To the children of Kohos he did not give [wagons], since the service of the holy was upon them. They carried on the shoulder.

We would think that the Torah should have said is that "theirs was the service of the holy." Emphasizing that the kelim they carried – and carried specifically on their shoulders, as the pasuk concludes – were “upon them” strikes us as unnecessarily weighing down the pasuk.

Parshas Naso
Harmonizing Without Homogenizing
HASHEM said to Moshe, One chieftain each day, one chieftain each day, shall present his offering for the dedication of the altar. The one who brought his offering on the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadav of the tribe of Yehuda. And his offering was one silver bowl weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels], one silver sprinkling basin [weighing] seventy shekels according to the holy shekel, both filled with fine flour mixed with olive oil for a meal offering. One spoon [weighing] ten [shekels] of gold filled with incense. One young bull, one ram and one lamb in its first year for a burnt offering. One young he- goat for a sin offering. And for the peace offering: two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs in their first year; this was the offering of Nahshon the son of Amminadav. (Bamidbar 7:11-17)
