The Torah Portion at a Glance

Balak, the King of Moab, summons the prophet Bi'lam to curse the people of Israel. On the way, Bi'lam is berated by his donkey, who sees the angel that YHWH sends to block their way before Bi'lam does. Three times, from three different vantage points, Bi'lam attempts to pronounce his curses; each time, blessings issue instead. Bi'lam also prophecies on the end of days and the coming of Moshiach.

The people fall prey to the charms of the daughters of Moab and are enticed to worship the idol Peor. When a high-ranking Israelite official publicly takes a Midianite princess into a tent, Pinchas kills them both, stopping the plague raging among the people.

Micha 5:6
This week's haftorah reveals to us Hashem's incredible love for His people. The prophet Micha opens by comparing the Jewish nation to a lion amongst the beasts. This refers to the Jewish nation's ultimate status in the Messianic era wherein there will be no need to turn to other nations for assistance. They will finally place their full trust in Hashem and recognize that salvation comes solely from Him. Micha continues the Messianic theme by describing Hashem's cleansing process whereby all idolatry and idolatrous cities will be destroyed.

Forever a Donkey
How is it possible for a pompous fool to have the gift of prophecy, to communicate directly with Hashem? This question immediately springs to mind as we read the amazing story of Bilaam in this week’s parshah. Bilaam had immense powers. He could marshal awesome cosmic forces to serve his designs. He could foresee the future all the way to Messianic times. And yet he seems to have been an evil, money-grubbing buffoon ridiculed by his own donkey. How could this be?

The most famous verse in our parashah is undoubtedly Bemidbar 24:5, “How good are your tents, Yaakov, your dwelling places, Yisrael.” The midrash states that the “dwelling places” referred to are the batei knesset / shuls and batei midrash / study halls where Torah is studied. Accordingly, writes R’ Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor z”l (1816-1896; rabbi of Kovno, Lithuania), we can interpret our verse as follows: In what merit will our tents be good, i.e., in what merit will we dwell in G-d’s “tent” in Olam Ha’ba forever? In the merit of our dwelling places, i.e., in the merit of the Torah we study in this world.
