SCIENCE VS. TORAH

CONFLICT OR ILLUSION?

Before addressing the specific question of the "two stories" of the flood, a larger question (to which we alluded last week) should be addressed.

Much has been made of the apparent conflict between Science and Torah. In clearer terms, since the world has embraced the methods of scientific reasoning and has been willing to challenge a fundamentalist reading of the Bible, these two versions of reality have been constantly thrown against each other. Is the world 6,000 years old - or several billion? Were there six days of creation - or many trillions? Did Man evolve from "lower species" or was he formed ex nihilo as the crown of creation?

Analyzing the Two Stories of the Flood

TWO STORIES - AGAIN???

As we encountered in last week's Parashah, the main story of our Sidra - the flood and its aftermath - seems to be told twice, in conflicting versions. The existence of these "rival versions" can best be demonstrated by using each to answer basic questions about the flood and its aftermath: (We will refer to "V1" and "V2" here; the thread which binds them will be suggested later on.)

A: THE NATURE OF EVIL

Q1: What caused God to decide to destroy the earth?

V1: "The earth became corrupt before God; the earth was filled with lawlessness...for all flesh had corrupted its ways on earth" (6:11-12)

V2: "Hashem saw how great was man's wickedness on earth, and how every plan devised by his mind was nothing but evil all the time" (6:5)

Yeshaya 54
This week's haftorah projects the glorious future of the Jewish people and describes the splendor of Jerusalem in breath-taking dimensions. In the midst of this indescribable vision the prophet Yeshaya draws a striking comparison between our present exile and the flood in the time of Noach. Yeshaya says in the name of Hashem, "For a brief moment of anger I concealed My countenance from you but with everlasting kindness I will show My compassion. As with the waters of Noach about which I swore that they will never again flood the world so have I sworn never again to become angry with Israel." (54: 8, 9) The prophet assures the Jewish people that their painful years of exile will soon draw to a close never to be repeated. Drawing attention to the flood, he guarantees that, "As the world has never experienced a second flood so will the Jewish people never experience another exile." This peculiar equation between the flood and the Jewish people's exile suggests a strong association between the two. It appears that Hashem's unconditional guarantee to withhold a flood from this world serves as sound evidence to the eternal redemption of the Jewish people.

Meaningful Speech
At that time, all the earth spoke one language, and was united in speech. (Bereishis 11:1)

We know the power of speech; we witness it everyday. Words have the power to build lasting relationships, and even to save people’s lives. Though it is true that a picture can be worth a thousand words, it is also true that the right words at the right moment can accomplish things that even a thousand pictures cannot. Apparently, it was their common language that allowed the Generation of the Dispersion to work together in order to embark upon the bold project of building a stone skyscraper that would reach Heaven.

The Path to Serving God
The opening parshiyot of the Torah portray a rather dismal picture of the human race and of our world generally. Everything noble and worthwhile seems to have spun away in a flood of vice, avarice, and murder. And this type of human behavior seems to have filtered down to the other forms of life on the planet as well.

The great flood described in this week’s parsha can therefore be seen, so to speak, as a do-over, by God, of the time of creation. We all know the feeling that comes upon us when after working on a project for a period of time, when we become convinced of the project’s failure and are aware of the need to start all over again from the beginning, we must discard all that had previously been invested in the endeavor.

Sponsored by Mrs. Esther Liberman and family in memory of husband and father Yaakov Azriel ben Aharon David a”h

The Vogel family on the yahrzeit of father and grandfather Aharon Shimon ben Shemayah a”h (Arthur Kalkstein)

Today’s Learning:
Mishnah: Nazir 2:7-8
Tanach: Yehoshua 23-24
Daf Yomi (Bavli): Shabbat 17
Halachah: Mishnah Berurah 139:8-10

The Gemara (Berachot 29a) asks: “Why are there seven aliyot in the Shabbat Torah reading?” It answers: “They parallel the seven times that King David referred to a ‘kol’ / ‘voice’ in connection with water [in Tehilim ch.29].”

R’ Avraham Yitzchak Hakohen Kook z”l (1865-1935; Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Eretz Yisrael) explains: At first glance, attaining shleimut (roughly translated, “perfection” or “completeness”) seems to be the result of work and action, whereas rest seems to be unproductive and lacking value. In reality, though, the shleimut that is attained through action is made possible by the rest that preceded the action. Being at ease mentally enables the actions that one takes to be focused.

A Building To Nowhere1
The whole world was of one language and of common purpose….Let us build a city and a tower with its top in the heavens…

Rashi: [Common purpose means that] they arrived at a shared idea. They said, “It is not appropriate that He should chose the heavens for Himself! We will ascend and wage war with Him.

They did not plan to go anywhere, nor to displace G-d from His heavenly position. They did mean to figuratively unseat Him, as it were. They were intent on not accepting an absolute distinction between His realm and theirs. This distinction would have left them powerless to resist His dictates. At this they balked.

Parshas Noach
From Life
And Noach began (profaned himself)- the man of the earth, and planted a vineyard. And he drank of the wine, and was drunk and he was uncovered within his tent. (Breishis 9:20-21)

And Noah began: “Vaychal”- This can be understood as “he made himself profane”- for he should have first engaged in planting something different. — Breishis Rabbah . i.e., he should not have planted a vineyard, from which wine is produced, but other trees. (Rashi)

Why did Noach degrade himself by planting wine first and getting drunk? ` Was he not introduced to us as a “righteous and perfect man”!? Why did he deviate so dramatically from his stature as an extra good man?
