Message 1-22-11
Yitro-Jethro (Abundance)
Exodus 18:1-20:23
Isaiah 6:1-7:6, 9:6-7 (5-6)
Introduction
With this Parashah, we have reached the pivotal moment in the entire Torah, the Revelation at Sinai, the moment in which God’s Resence is made manifest to the Israelites. With the Matan Torah/the Giving of the Torah at Sinai, the covenant is sealed.
This awesome event marks the first time that “God’s redemptive acts on Israel’s behalf require a reciprocal response on the part of Israel.” Israel is no longer to be a passive group of slave/ex-slaves, buffeted by the waves of history and the will of the Eternal. They must weld themselves into a community and act in accordance with the agreement forged in flame and thunder at Mount Sinai.
The Haftarah parallels the communal revelation at Sinai with a more personal revelation experienced by the prophet Isaiah. Where God comes down to the people in the Torah portion, Isaiah is brought up to the throne of the Almighty. His “unclean lips” are purified by a seraph holding a red-hot coal to them (perhaps an echo of the “uncircumcised lips” of Moses), and he is sent back to earth to prophesy against the excesses of the Davidic line, much as Moses is sent to Pharaoh as the vehicle by which the Israelites will be liberated from Egypt.

Shalom Chaverim! You will find the weekly Torah, Haftarah, and Apostolic Scripture portions attached as a pdf file. This will be our normal means for sending out the weekly studies. For audio teachings on the weekly portions go to: www.etz-chayim.org/audio/audio.htm. These are free.

Chosen Generation

An Alarming Teaching from Dani'el Rendelman

Listen and Learn!

In 1 Peter 2:9 the Bible says,
"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light"

This verse is found in the New Testament and therefore many think that it is speaking to the Christian church.  However, this is a direct quote from the Tanakh or Old Testament.  What is the "holy nation" spoken of in this verse?  Who is Israel?  What is a gentile?  What does it mean to be a royal priesthood?  What is happening in the Holy Land?  Why is 1948 important?

Learn all of this and more as you listen to this teaching from Dani'el Rendelman.

Editor's Note:

Have you hugged a tree this week? They're celebrating their new years, you know. Look, if it were up to my fourth grade teacher, I would be a tree for life. That's all she thought I was good for when she cast parts for the school production.
Anyway, the Jewish New Year for trees is this Thursday, and if you don't know how to celebrate, you might feel a little awkward walking out there into their party. Obviously, you'll want to get some fruits to the table-but which ones? I suggest you brush up a little on the topic. How about starting with some of this week's offerings?
While you're at it, join us in an all 'round celebration of just how amazing this world really is. That's the theme of a lot of our magazine this week. Trees are just the beginning.
