Message 10-30-10
Chayei Sarah-Life of Sarah
Genesis 23:1-25:18
1 Kings 1:1-31

Introduction
Sarah dies at 127. Abraham buys the cave of Machpelah in order to bury Sarah. Abraham sends his servant to find a bride for Isaac. Rebecca shows her kindness (and fitness to be Isaac’s wife) by giving the servant water and offering to draw water for his camels. The servant meets her family, including her brother Laban, and then takes Rebecca to Isaac, who marries her. Abraham takes another wife, named Keturah. At the age of 175 Abraham dies, and Isaac and Ishmael bury him in the cave of Machpelah.

Chayei_Sarah commentaries from Ardelle

Can we do תפילות prayers for:
Ardelle and Cal

That through them The האור Light,  רפואה The Healing and The ואהבה Love of ישועת יהוה Yeshuath YHWH may come back to הארץ The Land of Israel?

Shalom!

I am probably a week behind with this little tidbit, but I read an interesting comment on Isaac’s name from the book, The Secrets of Hebrew Words by Benjamin Blech.

Quote – The two children of Abraham would each be ancestors of different peoples.  They would represent two totally different cultures, at war with the other to this very day.  Isaac fathers Jacob, and we are the children of Israel.  Ishmael is the ancestor of Arab nations.

Isaac’s name means “he will laugh.”  Ishmael was rejected by Sarah and cast out of the household because –

“And Sarah saw the son of Hagar, the Egyptian, whom she had born unto Abraham making sport.”  (Genesis 21:9)

What is the crucial difference between Isaac (Yod, Tzadi, Chet, Kuf) and the one who is making sport (Mem, Tzadi, Chet, Kuf)?  Making sport is laughter in the present tense.   It is an outlook that demands immediate gratification.  It is identified by the Midrash with sexual immorality, bloodshed, and idolatry.  Isaac (Yod, Tzadi, Chet, Kuf) prefaced by the Yod, turns the root into the future tense, making him willing to defer laughter.  The world to come is more valuable and longed for than the present time.  Isaac (Yod, Tzadi, Chet, Kuf) can say “no” to the here and now for the sake of eternity.  (end of quote)

I find this very interesting because Yeshua, as pictured through the life of Isaac, also was able to defer immediate gratification for the sake of OUR eternity.  We can also gain better understanding from this verse in Luke:

Luke 6:25 Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For you shall mourn and weep.

Shabbat Shalom!
Ardelle
