And Hashem said to Avram, get yourself out, from your country, and from your birthplace, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you." This is one of the ten tests with which Hakadosh Baruch Hu tested Avraham.

There would appear to be a difficulty here, for Hakadosh Baruch Hu promised him, "And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing" (Beraishit xii, 2), and Rashi explains: "Since travel causes three things - it reduces childbearing, reduces one's money and reduces one's fame - he therefore needed these three blessings, and he was promised regarding children, money and fame." If that is the case, then any person, even the most simple, would agree to leave his house and travel to a distant land in order to merit children after so many years of longing for a son, as "Avram was seventy five years old when he left Charan."

They return to Canaan with great wealth and Abram parts with his nephew Lot. Abram defeats the armies of the four kings who had taken his nephew Lot hostage. G‑d seals a pact with Abram, bequeathing the lands of Canaan to his descendants. Childless Abram marries Hagar and she gives birth to Ishmael. G‑d changes Abram's name to Abraham, and Sarai becomes Sarah. Abraham is circumcised at the age of 99.

JUDGES CHAPTER 5

THE SONG OF DEVORA

It was fitting that Devora should sing the song of victory over Sisera. DEVORA is from the root DAVAR, "word", as in DIBUR, "speech" (= Malchut, through which Godliness is revealed.) When speech rises to the level of song, speech is perfected through the musical notes of the melody (TA'AMEY HAMIKRA), which come from a higher level. Speech is from the Nefesh ego-soul (Malchut) while song is from the Neshamah-soul (Binah, Understanding). Understanding elevates speech.

JUDGES CHAPTER 3

The opening verses of our text paint a picture that is depressingly familiar to the modern Israeli. The generation that witnessed the heroic days of the miraculous conquest of the Land had passed, and a new generation arose that had not seen God's great work and they rebelled against Him (see Rashi on verse 1). Instead of enjoying peace and prosperity in the Land pursuing the Torah, they were forced to learn the art of warfare, just as in contemporary Israel, where the very flower of the country's youth are sacrificed on the altar of war.
