KORBAN MINCHAH

A Minchah, meaning "tributary gift" to God, is the fifth type of Korban. Although in other parts of Tanakh the term "Minchah" is applied to offerings of both agricultural produce and animals (B'resheet 4:3-4; Sh'muel I 2:15-17), in Korbanic legislation it strictly refers to grain offerings. Generally, it is comprised of semolina wheat (solet) and olive oil with some frankincense spice (levonah) added. It could be offered in several varieties: raw, oven-baked in either a thick or thin preparation, or fried either on a griddle or deep-fried in a pan. A fistful is burnt on the altar and the remainder eaten by male priests within sanctuary precincts.

The laws of the Minchah are delineated in Vayyikra, Chapter 2 - and later, from the Kohanic perspective, in 6:7-11. [It is recommended that you read these sections before continuing].

Prophecy in Purim & the Passover Deliverance
We will overcome By Jane Diffenderfer
The Book of Esther is not just the story of "once upon a time in a kingdom far away," it is a living lesson for the saints of the Most High. According to Revelation 12:14, these saints are defined as those "…that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus [Yeshua]." Are the saints of Revelation two people groups, those that keep the commandments, and another who hold on to the faith of Yeshua? Or are they one group, one people, with one faith who hold on to both? The Book of Esther is a veiled prophecy, which indicates these two people groups have joined to become one powerful force to be reckoned with in the Last Days.

Editor's Note:

Dear readers,
I will never forget the scene. My grandfather, Rabbi Chaim Meir Bukiet, a Talmudic scholar, was speaking in Lexington, Mass., where my uncle Rabbi Alter Bukiet is rabbi.
"The Gemara," he began, quoting the Talmud, "says that when a wife and a husband are not at peace, the mizbe'ach sheds tears," referring to the altar that stood in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
"Why specifically the altar? Why not the candelabrum or the laver?
"The Kabbalistic masters taught that sacrifices were not just in the Holy Temple; they are a part of every person's daily life. When I put my needs aside for the good of another—that is sacrifice. When there is no peace in the home, no shalom bayit, we are not sacrificing enough. For this reason," Grandfather concluded, "the altar sheds tears. It weeps, thinking that we have failed to sacrifice enough."
This week we read the Torah portion of Tzav, which deals largely with sacrifices. Take some time to see where you can sacrifice, for your family, your community, for the world. And of course, enjoy the many articles that delve into the various practical lessons we learn from the sacrifices in the Holy Temple.
Have a great week!

Chazal explain the pasukim regarding the creation of light on the first day as corresponding to the Five Books of the Torah. "And G-d said, Let there be light; and there was light. And G-d saw the light that it was good, and G-d divided between the light and the dark. And G-d called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And it was evening, and it was morning, one day" (Beraishit, i). "Said Rabbi Simon: Light is mentioned here five times, corresponding to the Five Books of the Torah. 'And G-d said, Let there be light' corresponds to the book of Beraishit, in which Hakadosh Baruch Hu was involved in creating His world; 'and there was light' corresponds to the book of Shemot in which Israel came out from gloom to light; 'And G-d saw the light that it was good' corresponds to the book of Vayikra which is full of many halakhot...'"(Beraishit Rabbah 3:5)

"And He called to Moshe"

(Leviticus 1:1)
Adar 28, 5772/March 22, 2012

"And He called to Moshe." (Leviticus 1:1) With profound and sacred intimacy, G-d, (referred to by the first half of Leviticus' opening verse only as "He"), "calls" out to Moshe. This soulful, primordial call doesn't assume the form or timbre of a spoken word until the second half of our verse, "and HaShem spoke to him."

Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.

Parshas Vayikra
Sfas Emes, Zechuso Tagein Aleinu, Parshas Vayikra, 5631

The Sfas Emes begins with the first Medrash Rabba on Parshas Vayikra. That Medrash starts with a comment by R. Tanchum on the pasuk in Tehillim (103:20): "Borachu HaShem mal'achav, giborei ko'ach, osei retzono, lishmo'ah bekohl devaro." (ArtScroll: "Bless HaShem, O His angels; the strong warriors who do His bidding, to obey the voice of His word.")

He called to Moshe, and God spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying . . . (Vayikra 1:1)

Purim may now be behind us, but it still has something important to be said to us especially on our way to Pesach.
