What is Shabbat Shalom?

Jews all over the world read a portion of the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, in the synagogue every Shabbat morning. The cycle begins right after the Feast of Tabernacles and concludes the following year at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles. Traditionally, Jewish families discuss the Torah portion at their Shabbat Table, bringing new insights, each year, to the same inspirational words and stories that they have been reading for years. In this weekly column, Sondra Oster Baras, CFOIC Heartland's Israel Director, shares her personal reflections on the weekly Torah portion.

Bo (Go)
Exodus 10:1 - 13:16

This week's Torah portion includes the final three plagues and the beginning of the exodus. It also includes the instructions for the celebration of the Passover holiday and the procedure for the sacrifice of the lamb. The chapter which includes these instructions, Chapter 12, begins with the following Scripture: "This month is for you the head of the months, it is first for you of the months of the year." (Exodus 12:2). This is G-d's instruction to Moses regarding the Biblical calendar, which is a lunar calendar, and forms the basis for the Jewish methods of counting months and calculating the holidays.

Rashi, the most widely-read traditional Biblical commentary, notes that the use of the words "this month" indicates that G-d actually pointed out the moon, the word "month" being interchangeable with the word "moon." In other words, G-d spoke to Moses on the first day of the lunar month and showed him the moon as it looks on the first day of the month -- a tiny sliver. In this way, G-d instructed Moses as to how to identify the first day of the new month. Interestingly, the first month of the Jewish calendar is the month of Passover, the month of our redemption from slavery. In Biblical terms, it is referred to as the first month. Today, we call the month by name -- Nissan.

The Bible refers to the months by number. The first time the months are referred to in the Bible is during the story of the flood, when the Bible clearly tells us the date that the waters receded. (Genesis 8:4) However, it is not until the above-quoted verse in Exodus that we understand that the first month is the Passover month, the month of Nissan. We also know from Deuteronomy 16:1: "Preserve the month of spring" that this month of Nissan always falls in the spring. This last verse also teaches us that we must add an extra month every 3 years (approximately) to ensure that the month of Nissan always falls in the spring, as the lunar calendar is 11 days shorter than the solar calendar.

After the destruction of the first Temple, when the Jews were exiled to Babylonia, which soon after became part of the Persian Empire, we adopted the Persian names for the months, as the Persians also used the lunar calendar. Hence the renaming of the first month, Nissan.

The dates of the Biblical holidays were set firmly in the Bible. It was, therefore, imperative, that every Jew know the exact day that the new month began so as to be able to celebrate the holiday on the right day. Also, when G-d actually pointed out the moon to Moses and instructed him in determining the first day of the month, He effectively handed over the authority for setting the Jewish calendar to Moses and to those spiritual leaders who would follow him. In fact, this was the sole responsibility of the high court of Jerusalem and there were people whose job it was to look for the first moon and to report the find to the authorities in Jerusalem.

Amazingly, there was an elaborate system to ensure that the Jews throughout the Land of Israel would receive immediate word of the start of the new month. A number of mountain tops were selected that stand out from the landscape. As soon as the high court declared the new month, bonfires were lit in the hills of Judea and from there, each succeeding mountaintop boasted its own bonfire and the signal spread throughout the land. Two mountains that we can identify today as having participated in this ceremony are the Sartaba Mountain in the Jordan Valley and Mt. Tabor in the lower Galillee.

After the destruction of the Second Temple, these same mountains and their bonfires were used to pass signals during the Bar Kochba rebellion, (in the years 132-135) the last attempt to assert Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel before the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

And finally, the first day of the month is called Rosh Chodesh in Hebrew or "Head of the Month", a variation of the term used in Exodus 12 when referring to the first month as the "Head of the Months". To this very day, it is a special day when special prayers of praise are sung to G-d. And each month, when we celebrate the renewal of the moon that signifies the beginning of the month, we remember G-d's loving instruction to Moses: "This month."

And one more thought -- G-d also uses the term "this" when he promises Abraham the Land of Israel -- "I will give this land to your children" (Genesis 12:7). The intimacy of G-d's instruction to both Abraham and Moses is truly awe-inspiring!

Shabbat Shalom from Samaria,

Making 2011 a Better and More Productive Year than 2010
A Call to Action from Key of David Publishing

Shalom,
We can all agree that we hope 2011 will be a better and more productive year than 2010. The question that we need to ask is, what can we do to make it a better and more productive year?

Each of us are fighting a battle similar to the one Wally Smith and his congregation are fighting. He is the Pastor of House of Israel Fellowship: A Free Congregation of Messianic Christians, in Las Vegas. He also co-authored with Batya Wootten, the book, Israel Empowered by the Spirit,. Wally and his congregation are fighting a battle in Las Vegas, and to help you successfully fight the battle in your own hometown, I want to share with you a letter I just sent to him.

Shalom Wally,

The following popped up in some notes I had made in the past. I thought I would share them with you since you are hosting the MIA Southwestern Regional Conference in Las Vegas at the end of this month. The following statistics are based on the number of pages in the 2010 Yellow-page listings for Las Vegas.

The Battle for Las Vegas

Our Potential Forces

There are 9 pages that list some 739 Churches in 63 denominations or Classifications. Plus there are 15 Synagogues in 4 sects: Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Messianic.

The Opposition

The same Yellow-pages lists some 32 pages of Entertainment, with 933 entries, and 125 listed under "Adult".
22 pages listing 540 Hotels and Casinos.
59 pages listing 4,493 restaurants.
9 pages listing Golf with 37 Golf Courses
2 pages listing 8 Abortion Clinics

Our Weapons

Words. The "word of mouth" backed up by books, videos, teachings, etc., is our most effective weapon in the situation or environment that we find ourselves in.

This leads me to ask, what would happen if the 739 Churches were offered a complementary copy of Who Is Israel? Redeemed Israel - A Primer, along with information about your upcoming conference?

There is only one way to find out the answer. Send them a letter.

I have copied below a letter by Dennis Northington, who works with me on the Zechariah's Patrol site. He is sending the letter to some 500 pastors in the Austin, Texas area.

What might be the results of sending out a similar letter to the Pastors of the 739 Churches in Las Vegas? There really is only one way to know, send the letter!

Never forget that we are winners! I know, because I have read the end of the Good Book!

Here's to winning the war!

Angus

Dear Pastor XYX,

I am writing today to encourage you and thank you for your work, service and dedication to the good news of our Savior here in Austin.

It is amazing to open the book of James and read: "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting." Peter also penned: "... to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ..." And Paul wrote, "Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh... remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world."

These men wrote to the scattered twelve tribes and strangers - the believing "elect" of Israel. We also know Paul wrote these familiar words to those in Rome:

"For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved" (Romans 11:25).

The promise that "all Israel" shall be saved by God's covenant is an amazing "faith" statement thatWho Is Israel? - Redeemed Israel - A Primer is explored in a simple book that you can share with anyone who is interested in "Israel." It is, Who Is Israel? Redeemed Israel - A Primer. This powerful and concise 96 page book readily defines our faith. It lifts up the Messiah and points us toward the restoration of the whole House of Israel.

This simple Primer clearly outlines Israel's blessings, reveals why Israel was chosen, and it unveils the glorious destiny of reunited Israel. The book encourages Jewish and non-Jewish Believers in Messiah (Judah and Ephraim) to become the promised "one new man"-to become purified sons who are able to take the Land.

I would be happy to send you a complementary copy of this Scripture-based book today. It addresses those scattered peoples that James and Peter addressed their letters to and it shows many wonderful truths about "all" Israel of which Paul so eloquently wrote about as well. It digs into God's word and provides great encouragement to the Body of Messiah.

Please write, email, or call me today for a complementary copy, which is inspiring many Believers everywhere!

In Messiah,

Can we do תפילות prayers for:

Ephraim & Rimona Frank?

That also through them The האור Light, רפואה The Healing and The ואהבה Love of ישועת יהוה Yeshuath YHWH may come back to הארץ The Land of Israel?

Shalom Fellow Israelite,

During our stay in Korea we heard of the believers' love for Israel and their faithfulness and devotion to pray for her. However, as we mentioned last week, after further investigation we found that among those so engaged there were many whose motivation for praying and blessings Israel is based on an understanding that whoever blesses Israel will be blessed. Some with a more evangelical inclination are hoping and praying for the Jews' "conversion," and among them there are evangelists who are actively involved in such ventures here in Israel. In a few of the meetings we also addressed those whose interest in Israel was minimal, while there were others whom we spoke to, who have had some teaching on Torah and Hebraic roots.

One group, whose very existence is based on their "mission" to Israel, was addressed by the question, "which Israel are you praying for?" This of course sent a little shock wave through the group, but because they were very open and keen to learn, and wanted to hear more we continued. The teaching took us to Isaiah 8:14: "And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel…" (The word in Hebrew for "both" is "the two" - root sh-n-m - and translated 532 times as "two"). Ezekiel 35 presented us with another example of how our enemies view Israel as two separated nations (goyim): "Because you have said, 'These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess them'" (Ezekiel 35:10). In the subsequent chapters of Ezekiel we saw how the prophet went on relating to Israel as two separate entities, until a time of restoration of, first the nation of Judah/Israel, and then the second one (Joseph or Ephraim/Israel. However, as we continued discussing this topic the fact that these two "goyim" were not destined to remain separate, but were to become one nation in YHVH's hand and in the land, became apparent.

As this sharing went on, focusing on the prophetic history pertaining to the nation of Joseph/Israel, one could almost see the hearts of the children beginning to turn back to the fathers (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). Because most of the time was spent on covering YHVH's faithfulness in fulfilling His covenant promises of multiplicity through the House of Joseph, we could only touch briefly on the prophetic destiny of Judah's nation. We did, however, have opportunities outside of the meetings to talk further, answer questions, and elaborate on specific topics.

In the two Israel-loving churches that we addressed, it was obvious that the congregants had been exposed to the 'standard' Christian doctrine, namely that there is no Israel outside of Judah. In each of those cases, though with a different emphasis, the Spirit led in a call for the participants to take up their responsibility toward Israel/Judah by being a true witness to the Hope of Israel and walking in YHVH's righteousness so as to provoke the natural branches to jealousy. "Sanctification" in the first meeting, and "hope" in the second were highlighted. Thus the challenge was about the kind of witness that the grafted-in "Gentiles" should portray toward God's natural people. We examined Romans 11, where Paul talks about the Gentiles (the "church," as they would have understood it) provoking to jealousy the natural branches through a witness of the righteousness of the Holy Spirit residing within them. We then went to 2nd Corinthians 4 and connected the "treasure in earthen vessels" mentioned there (the life of Yeshua) and His nature of righteousness, to the fruit of the Spirit. We concluded that the witness is His life within the believer, and that when the latter experiences the dying of Yeshua, the life and nature of the Father's Spirit will manifest and bring life to others (see 2 Corinthians 4:11-12). Thus, the testimony of the reality of the Jewish Messiah and His nature of love will be seen through these non-Jewish believers who are called out from the nations and who bear witness to Him by the love they have one for another. Of course the spiritual enemy knows that if he can get the true believers from the nations to continue to walk in the nature of his kingdom through religious pride and self-righteousness, which will obviously kill, steal and destroy relationships, he will succeed in squelching the witness of who the true Messiah is. Neither will anyone be provoked to jealousy, especially not the Jewish people. So we encouraged them to not only pray for the Jewish people and the land of Israel, but for what they understand to be the "church," to mature in Yeshua's nature.

Quite different from any of the above-mentioned, was the meeting we had at Seoul University, where as a rule Christians and non-Christians convene. It was the centrality of the Creator and His purpose in bringing forth this present heaven and earth, which seemed to be called for at that event. Our discussion of the creation account engendered good comments and questions. We give thanks and praise to our Heavenly Father for all that He allowed us to experience and through it all bring glory to our Redeemer and King Messiah Yeshua.

Shabbat Shalom,

Ephraim

"Asking Their Egyptian Friends For Silver and Gold": Two Insights

This week's parsha contains the following pasukim: "...Yet one more plague will I bring upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go from here...Speak now in the ears of the people, and let them ask every man of his friend and every woman of her friend, jewels of silver and jewels of gold." [Shmos 11:1-2].

The Gerer Rebbe focuses in on the use of the word "v'yishalu" [let them ask]. Usually, the word yishalu connotes borrowing. We all know that in this situation the Jews did not intend to return the items for which they were asking. Why then does the Torah use the word "v'yishalu"? The Gerer Rebbe explains that this is the first time that the Jewish people as a nation were "coming into money". Money, as we know, is a powerful force. On the occasion of the first time that they came into money, G-d instructed the people that it can make people or break them. Therefore, whenever one acquires wealth like this, it they should always consider it "borrow ed money". G-d may allow us to become rich, but we should view ourselves as merely the guardians of the money. We are only the trustees. It is not really ours. We cannot take it with us. It is not permanent.

Thus, from the Egyptian perspective, "you shall ask" (v'yishalu) "for money" is not really asking. The Jews were clearly TAKING the money from the Egyptians. However, they were instructed to consider it BORROWED money in relationship to themselves!

The Netziv (Rav Naftali Tzvi Yehudah Berlin) focuses in on the words "from their friends" (m'es rei-ay-hu; me'es re-u-sah). The Netziv points out that we have a very similar pasuk in Parshas Shmos. However, there we read "Let every woman borrow from her neighbor (isha m'shechenta) ...jewels of silver and jewels of gold, and raiment..." [Shmos 3:22]. The Netziv asks why the Torah changes its language. Why is it that in Parshas Shmos, the Torah speaks of borrowing from a neighbor and here in Parshas Bo, the Torah s peaks of borrowing from a friend?

The Netziv makes a startling comment. Parshas Shmos was before the plagues began. Who would the Jews go to ask "Could I have that silver tea set that I see in the breakfront?" One can only ask that from someone who is at best, an acquaintance. They did not have any "friends" to ask that from, because there was no friendship between the Egyptians and the Jews. However, in Parshas Bo, something profound happened. Suddenly, the Egyptians are indeed our friends.

What happened? The answer is that the plague of Choshech [Darkness] had just occured. This plague lasted at least 3 days. This was more than just a "blackout" with the lights turned off. This was a tangible darkness (v'yamesh choshech), such that people were afraid to move. They could not get out of their chairs. They could not get out of their beds.

How then, asks the Netziv, did the Egyptians eat during this period? How did they drink? If people could not move then they could not even "fumble around and find some food in the house". If people would not eat or drink for 3 days, they would die. How is it that there was a whole nation who survived to tell the tale? It must be, says the Netziv, that during this plague, which only affected the Egyptins not the Jews, the Jews went and gave food and water to their Egyptian "friends".

The Netziv is saying that "a friend in need is a friend indeed." Thst is what changed. In Parshas Shmos, there was no way they could find a friend to go ask for gold and silver. However, in Parshas Bo, it was a different relationship. The Egyptian neighbors now recognized that these Jewish neighbors saved their lives during the time of the Plague of Darkness. Now they considered themselves ”friends".

The fact that the Jews saved the lives of the Egyptians – who after all, were their tormentors, speaks to the unbelievable compassion of the Jewish people. Once they made that gesture, they had an enti rely different relationship with the Egyptians. They could now approach them not as "neighbors" but as "friends".

The Priorities In Life Are Never Placed In The Checked Baggage

The Jewish people are about to leave Egypt. Pharaoh is finally willing and indeed anxious to send out everyone – men, women, children, flocks, and cattle. Everyone and everything the Jews wanted to take out of Egypt could now leave with them. The pasuk tells us: "The people picked up their dough when it had not yet become leavened, their leftovers bound up in their garments upon their shoulders" [Shmos 12:34]. Rashi says the term "leftovers" refers to the matzah and marror left over from the previous night's meal. It was this that they carried in their little knapsacks on their shoulders as they left Egypt.

We are all familiar with what our dining room floor looks like after the Seder. It looks like a Matzah factory with pieces of lettuce spread all over the place! What do we do? We sweep it up and throw it out.

The Jews at that "first Seder" in Egypt did not sweep the leftovers up and throw them out. They swept them up, wrapped them together, and put them in knapsacks, which they carried out of Egypt on their shoulders! Rashi adds that even though they had many animals on which they could have placed these packages, they purposely carried them themselves to show their love of the mitzvos.

A person does not throw the most precious item into the donkey's saddlebag. It can fall out. It can get lost. If something is very special, you take it with you in your "hand luggage". No one ever places valuables into their "checked baggage" on airplanes. People carry their most precious items on themselves.

Rav Simcha Zissel asks: The pasuk just stated that they borrowed gold and silver vessels. Where did they put them? Apparently, they put the gold and the silver on the donkeys but the leftover pieces of matzo and marror they carried on their own shoulders.

Klal Yisrael understood what is important and what is not important; what must be a priority in life and what is not a priority in life. The gold and silv er was "replaceable". The matzo and marror, which represented the miraculous redemption from Egypt, and which represented their relationship with the Almighty, was "irreplaceable." That was not something that could be entrusted to the donkeys. They carried it on their shoulders.
