Parshas Devarim
Yeshaya 1:1
This week's haftorah concludes the three week series related to the exile of the Jewish people and the destruction of their Bais Hamikdash. This final reading goes down on record as the strongest message of reprimand ever delivered to the Jewish people. The prophet Yeshaya depicts the moral conduct of the Jews as being the most corrupt and wicked one since the days of Sedom and Gemorah. He declares the Jews to be even worse than animals, and says in the name of Hashem, "The ox knows his master and the donkey his owner's feeding tray but My nation doesn't know and doesn't even consider Me. Woe guilty people, heavy with sin, evil and corrupt children who forsook Hashem and disgraced Israel's Holy One." (1:3,4) Yeshaya continues with more harsh words of chastisement, and says, "Why should you continue to be beaten if you just increase your straying? From head to toe there is no clear spot, only stabs, bruises and open wounds. But you have not treated them, not bandaged them or even softened them." (1:5,6) The prophet indicates that after all the beatings they have received the Jewish people haven't even made an attempt to rectify their faults.

The weekly Sfas Emes is now available in a Sefer. The Seferis called Emes Ve'emunah : A Sfas Emes Companion. This Sefer contains all of the materials in the weekly emails, plus new insights. The Sefer also contains the text in lashon hakodesh on which the Sfas Emes worked to produce his ma'amar. Accessing the the Sfas Emes via the Sefer offers advantages. You have the week's Torah without having to print the email. You have the Sfas Emes' text--which could not be sent by email. Also many people who would enjoy the Sfas Emes do not have internet. You can purchase this Sefer at your favorite bokstore, or online, at the Targum or Feldheim websites. Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.

Parshas Devarim
Note the following problem. Too often, when we encounter a mashal (metaphor, parable ), or a statement that Chazal wrapped in the form of aggada, we assume that its message is only of marginal importance. For this reason, we do not make the effort to penetrate the code or the metaphor within which the message is presented.

By contrast, when the Sfas Emes works with a difficult ma'amar of Chazal, he insists that the statement must make sense. Accordingly, he takes the time and effort necessary to understand the ma'amar, and explain it to us. Here are two examples that illustrate the Sfas Emes's discipline in this respect. They also show the potential benefit that we can gain from taking Chazal's words seriously rather than taking the path of "let's skip the Aggadata."

Tanach: Eichah
Mishnah: Ketubot 5:6-7
Daf Yomi (Bavli): Niddah 68
Daf Yomi (Yerushalmi): None
Halachah Yomit: Orach Chaim 91:6-92:2

Our parashah begins with what appears to be a review of Bnei Yisrael’s travels in the desert. Rashi z”l observes, however, that there is no other mention in the Torah of some of the place names that Moshe Rabbeinu lists here. Rather, Rashi explains, these terms should be understood as veiled allusions to some of the sins that Bnei Yisrael committed in the desert.

BS"D KNOW YOUR BIBLE: Jeremiah 49-50
Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

JEREMIAH CHAPTER 49

Vv 1-6: Prophecy of the punishment of Ammon. Like the Moabites, the Ammonites were descended from Abraham's nephew Lot but ungratefully showed nothing but hostility to Israel. Thus it was the king of Ammon who engineered the assassination of Gedaliah ben Ahikam, which brought Judean independence to an end (see Jer. 40:14).

V 1: "Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does Malkam (=the god of Ammon) inherit Gad and his people dwell in his cities?" – When the Ten Tribes went into exile, the neighboring Ammonites occupied the territories of Gad, Reuven and the other tribes, claiming that they had been seized from Ammon (RaDaK).

The Daily Zohar is published and sent out to you when the first light appears over the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. This is the best time to connect to the energy of Chessed that comes from the place of the Holy Temple and inject it into the Daily Zohar that you read below.
