Parshas Matos - Masei Yirmiyahu 2:4 This week's haftorah continues the theme of the three weeks and introduces the month of Av. The prophet Yirmiyahu reprimands the Jewish people and reminds them, in the name of Hashem, of all of the favors they have received over the years. Hashem asks, "What wrong did your fathers find in Me that distanced them from Me and resulted in their following the empty practices of idolatry diminishing the Jews to nothingness? They didn't turn to Hashem who brought them up from Egypt and led them through the desolate dangerous desert." Hashem continues, "And I brought them to the fertile land of Israel to partake of its fruits and goodness. But they defiled My land and disgraced My inheritance." (Yirmiyahu 2:5) Hashem faults the Jewish nation for presently rejecting Him and resorting to the shameful ways of idolatry.

Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.   Parshas Matos 5632 The Parsha begins with Moshe Rabbeinu in a meeting with the leaders of the Shevatim: Moshe tells them "Zeh Hadavar Asher Tsiva HaShem." (This is -- exactly -- what HaShem has commanded.") The Sfas Emes cites Rashi, who, in turn, follows the comment of the Sifri.. ( The Sifri is a classical commentary--dating from Tana'itic times-- on Bemidbar and Devarim.) The Sifri tells us that whenever Moshe transmitted the words of HaShem, he sometimes introduced those words, as did other prophets in communicating their prophecies, with the sentence "Koh Ahmar HaShem." "Koh" means: "more or less like this." Hence, the introductory sentence as a whole is: "This is -- approximately -- what HaShem said..." Moshe Rabbeinu, however, operated at a level much higher than all other prophets. As a result, ,Moshe was often able to transmit HaShem’s message with such precision that he could introduce the message with :: "Zeh Hadavar . . . " ("This is exactly what HaShem said.") The Torah signa ls this higher degree of clarity and precision by using the word "Zeh" rather than "Koh."

JEREMIAH CHAPTER 37

V 1: "And King Tzedekiah son of Josiah ruled…" Episodes and prophecies of Jeremiah from the latter years of the reign of King Tzedekiah have already appeared in earlier chapters (chs 28, 32-34). However, the last two chapters (35 & 36) are not in chronological sequence since they go back in time to the reign of Tzedekiah's older brother, Yeho-yakim. The latter reigned for eleven years, after which he was succeeded by his son Yeho-yachin, who ruled for only 3 months before being exiled to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar, who then appointed his uncle, Tzedekiah, as king of Judah in his place.

The last chapter (36) showed the depths to which the royal house of Judah had sunk in depicting Yeho-yakim tearing the true prophet's scroll of rebuke to shreds and casting them into the fire. He was literally burning the Torah! After this depiction of depravity, Rashi comments on our present verse (37:1): "Now the prophet comes to relate how the punishments he had been prophesying until now were actually fulfilled. With the arrival of the appointed time for his words to be fulfilled, he tells how a new king ruled over Judah in place of Yeho-yachin son of Yeho-yakim".

JEREMIAH CHAPTER 35

V 1: "The word that came to Jeremiah… in the days of Yeho-yakim…" While the prophecies in the previous chapters dated from the final years of King Tzedekiah shortly before the destruction of the Temple, the episodes recounted in Chapters 35 and 36 date from some ten to fifteen years earlier during the reign of Tzedekiah's older brother and predecessor, King Yeho-yakim.

V 2: "Go to the house of the Rechavites…" The Rechavites were descendants of Yeho-nadav (see II Kings 10:15), and were Kenites (see I Chronicles 2:55). These were a tribe descended from Jethro. As converts, they did not have their own tribal share in the Land of Israel but were originally given the right to occupy the territories around Jericho temporarily prior to their passing to the tribe of Benjamin after they lost part of their own territory with the designation of Jerusalem as the national capital. According to tradition, the Rechavites left the Jericho area of their own accord and went out into the wilderness of Judah (Arad) in order to study Torah with Othniel ben Kenaz (see RaDaK on Judges 1:16).
