"And it was on the eighth day" (Leviticus 9:1) II Adar 20, 5771/March 25, 2011 Imagine if you had an eighth day? One extra day in the week. Imagine all the things you could accomplish on that day, things that you can just never get to during the seven day week. In this week's Torah reading we read about the eighth day, and G-d, (and Israel), were, indeed, able to affect many incredible reality changing accomplishments: On this, the eighth day, Moses erected the Tabernacle, the Divine Service began, ten crowns descended upon the day itself, G-d's Presence, the Divine Shechinah, rested on Earth, and Israel's offerings were accepted by Heaven! Wow!

I am sorry I did not send the Torah portion out this week : (     This happened a couple of weeks ago and I stated the following, "This only happens about once every 3-4 years, so, those of you who are new to the list, don't worry.  It's not a regular occurrence."  Well, let me amend that to say "twice every 3-4 years."  : )  This past week was just too busy for me . . .  but . . .  It's shabbat, when my labors cease.   Also, remember that all Torah lessons are available 24-7 and downloadable from the web site.   Here are links to Shemini.

Is the Word of God forever, or can parts of it be abolished? As always, if we seek truth, we want to test these things to His Word, and not the doctrines of men.

Parshas Shemini Reality of Consequence "...and they died before Hashem" (10:2) The Zohar relates that both Nadav and Avihu were under the age of twenty when they died[1]. Since their deaths were a punishment by heavenly means, a difficulty arises; their deaths violate the accepted rule that the heavenly court does not mete out punishment to anyone under twenty years of age[2].. Some of the later commentaries respond to this difficulty based upon the opinion of the Tzelach that if a child exhibits superior intellect, he can be held responsible for his actions, even at a young age[3].

Parshas Shemini The Anonymous Sons of Aharon: An Analysis of Vayyikra 10 I Tragedy Our Parasha contains one of the two narratives which break up the flow of legalistic/covenantal material which comprises Sefer Vayyikra. Subsequent to being commanded regarding the various offerings to be brought in the Mishkan, God directed Mosheh as to the method of inauguration of the Kohanim into their positions as guardians of - and officiants in - the Mishkan. (Chapter 8 - this procedure, including the first seven-day Milu'im process, is known as Kiddush haKohanim).

Parshas Shemini Torah Calories1 What could be the connection between the previous narrative about Nadav and Avihu and the long treatment of permissible and impermissible foods that these pesukim introduce? Perhaps we don’t need one. Maybe, so to speak, there is always room for an appealing snack. Perhaps eating is so important a concern that you can always talk about it any place you have an opening.
