II CHRONICLES CHAPTER 22

The alliance between the House of David and the house of the wicked Ahab king of Israel almost led to the extinction of the royal line of David after the death of King Yehoram of Judah, son of King Yehoshaphat, which we read about at the end of the previous chapter (II Chron. 21:19-20). In retribution for Yehoram's leading Judah into idolatry, an invading army of Philistines and Arabs had captured and apparently killed all his sons and wives, leaving only his smallest son Yeho-achaz (ibid. v 16-17). When Yehoram died at the age of forty, the people of Jerusalem chose Yeho-achaz (also called Ahaziahu and Azariahu) to succeed him.

The story told in our present chapter appears only here in Chronicles, with merely the faintest reference to it in the parallel account of the reign of Yehoshaphat in I Kings 22:46. This in no way diminishes the great significance of this story as a teaching about the proper way for Israel to react in the face of attacks by their enemies.

In the account of the sin of the Ten Spies in the previous parshah of SHELACH LECHA, we learned about the painful consequences of distorted vision in man's relation with G-d. The Spies and those who listened to them lacked faith in G-d's promise to take them to the Land of Israel, allowing outward appearances deceive them into thinking they would be unable to conquer it. The sin could be rectified only through a protracted exile that comes to teach us that, in spite of outward appearances, G-d is in fact leading us to ultimate, complete possession of the Land.

Parshas Shlach Internal Injury "Send forth men..." (13:2) This week's parsha introduces the episode of the spies who spoke disparagingly concerning Eretz Yisroel. As a result of the spies' actions the entire generation of Bnei Yisroel who accepted their evil tidings were doomed to die in the desert[1]. Rashi explains that the reason why this parsha is juxtaposed to the story of Miriam's affliction with tzora'as recorded at the end of last week's parsha, is that the spies should have taken a lesson from Miriam regarding the consequences of speaking Loshon Horah[2]. The prohibition of speaking Loshon Horah is amongst the most severe offenses recorded in the Torah. The Chofeitz Chaim enumerates the many positive and negative precepts violated when engaging in Loshon Horah[3]. Why did the spies, who where the greatest leaders of the generation, require the incident with Miriam to teach them a precept which is clearly delineated in the Torah?

Good Shabbos One Can Recognize His Own Greatness Without Being Arrogant The final statement the Meraglim [Spies] made concerning their report regarding what they saw in the Land of Israel was: "There we saw the Nephillim, the sons of a giant from among the Nephillim; we in our eyes like grasshoppers; and so too were we in their eyes." [Bamidbar 13:33] We have commented in past years – how did the spies know how they looked to the Canaanites? They were, after all, not mind readers. The answer we have given is that if one perceives himself as a grasshopper then that will be how others perceive him as well! To put it colloquially, "if you think you are a shmateh [rag], then that is how others will look at you as well."

Parshas Shlach Two Halachic Highways1 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moshe and Aharon... What were they thinking? With all due respect to Aharon, did anyone believe that if Moshe could not provide an answer, that Aharon would? Note how they are ordered in the pasuk, with Moshe listed first. The plain reading is that they turned to them in sequence.

II CHRONICLES CHAPTER 18

"And Yehoshaphat… allied himself in marriage with Ahab" (v 1). The book of Chronicles was written in honor of the House of David and therefore, unlike the parallel texts in the book of Kings, gives only those details of the story of the kings of Israel that are strictly relevant to that of the kings of Judah. For better understanding of the narrative in the present chapter about King Yehoshaphat's joint military campaign with Ahab against Aram, which ended up with Ahab's death on the battlefield, it is necessary to keep in mind what we already know of the story of Ahab from the book of Kings

Parshas Shlach Right the Wrong For some people who write commentaries on the weekly parshah, Parashas Shlach-Lecha comes around only once a year. For me, however, every week is Parashas Shlach, since I spend so much time writing and speaking about that which went wrong with the Generation of the Spies, and what we must do today to rectify the situation. What can I say that is new, even for me, after all these years?
