Parshas B'Shalach These divrei Torah were adapted from the hashkafa portion of Rabbi Yissocher Frand's Commuter Chavrusah Tapes on the weekly portion: Tape #711 - Shlishi or Shishi? Tribes & Elders Given The Royal Treatment At Elim The pasuk says, "They arrived at Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date-palms; they encamped there by the water" [Shmos 15:27]. The Ramban wonders why it was so significant for us to know that there were 12 springs and 70 palm trees in Elim. This does not seem to be a particularly impressive number of either palm trees or flowing rivers. There are places, he notes, where thousands of date palms grow in close proximity to one another. Likewise, the number of flowing streams would not seem to be so significant that the Torah should bother to emphasize these facts. Even more troubling, the Ramban notes is that in Parshas Massei where the Torah reviews all the travels of the Jewish people in the wilderness, most of the stopovers are given very short shrift. Even the stopover at Marah, which was the site of significant events, the Torah only mentions in passing, very briefly. However, when the Torah mentions the stop at Elim in Parshas Massei , it again notes the number of springs and the number of palm trees [Bamidbar 33:9]. This surely begs for an explanation! What is so significant about this stop at Elim and the number of springs and palm trees? The Ramban quotes a Medrash – the Mechilta of Rebi Eliezer haModai – who notes that at the time of Creation, G-d created this place with 12 springs corresponding to the 12 Tribes of Israel and 70 palm trees corresponding to the 70 Elders (of the Sanhedrin). Each tribe dwelt by its own stream and each member of the Sanhedrin sat under the shade of his own palm-tree, thanking the Almighty for preparing this respite for them in a parched wilderness, from the time of Creation. What is the message of this Medrash? What is the Torah trying to tell us here? Consider the following parable: Imagine guests who are attending an "out-of-town wedding." The entire wedding entourage is staying in a hotel. The hosts have prepared a hotel room for each of the gues ts. In each hotel room, they prepared an elaborate package of fruits, cakes, chocolates, and drinks. Each room contains the newspaper of the home city of those guests. What does such an arrangement say to the guests? It tells the guests that they are very important. The hosts are so pleased to have the presence of each guest at their simcha that they went out of their way to cater to each one's personal needs. This section appears prior to the Receiving of the Torah. The Almighty went "out of His way", so to speak, to impress the Jewish people -- before they received the Torah -- with their importance. Each member of the Jewish people belongs to one of the 12 tribes. G-d did not merely provide a river with enough water for everyone to drink. Rather, He provided them with the equivalent of their "home newspaper" – a personalized stream for each tribe. The message is: "You are one of the 'Select Twelve' –- part of My treasured nation, My chosen people. I treat you like My honored guests." The other thing Klal Yisrael must know before they receive the Torah is that "Kabbalas HaTorah" cannot work without the 70 Elders. We are dependent on those who transmit Torah, that special subset of the nation who teach the Torah and tell us how to interpret the Torah. That bit of knowledge is crucial before Kabalas HaTorah. The awareness of these two concepts is fundamental for the nation. They must be aware of the importance of every Tribe and of the importance of the transmitters of Torah to our nation. Therefore, from the beginning of time, G-d already prepared this message, by creating the 12 streams flowing and the 70 palm trees growing in Elim, on the way between Egypt and Mt. Sinai. His awesome plan truly on display every day for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear and a heart to receive what has been written and given. I pray that all would see, but especially the House of Israel/Ephraim as the tribes make their return. I thank G-d for putting on display through Judah, in the keeping of His appointed feasts, His eternal plan and that He has given me eyes to see!! " You have two possibilities to study: Complete training with graduation or Personal enrichment. From the beginning of the messianic calling of the first Patriarch, the Torah teaches us that faith is the key to salvation. Grace also has been present since the beginning. If one doesn't study the foundations of this plan a great part of the Revelation is lost, notably, the Revelation of Messiah Yeshua. Receiving Him in our heart as Savior and Master is one thing, one first necessary step for our salvation, but our path doesn't stop there. After Pesach (salvation by grace), we must head to the Festival celebrated in honor of HaShem, "three days walk" after the reception of the Torah: Shavuot. Avraham saw the L-rd, and the story of his life and of his descendents reveals His Presence, even from the beginning. The same way we have received the Savior in our hearts, it is now about receiving His Torah engraved in our hearts, even as proclaimed by the prophets in Jeremiah 31:31. True new birth takes place by the action of the Ruach HaKodesh, who circumcises our hearts to be able to walk according to the criteria of holiness of Elohim. But in order to be able to walk in these commandements, under Yeshua's yoke, we need to know the Word. When did G-d speak, before the eyes and to the ears of all, with the sound of thunder, setting ablaze an entire mountain? The answer is obvious: the Creator of the universe came to reveal His heart at Mount Sinai, a place that didn't belong to anyone, and that was open freely to all those who wanted to drink the waters of life. Yeshua manifested Himself on that day at Mount Sinai, but only Moshe could see Him. Moshe's skin shone so intensely that he covered it with a veil. He shone from the initial Light of Creation: the Light of Messiah. He is the PURPOSE of the Torah; He fills us with His love and calls us to follow Him, to prepare a heavenly Bride. He left us these words: John 5:45-47 But don't think that it is I who will be your accuser before the Father. Do you know who will accuse you? Moshe, the very one you have counted on! For if you really believed Moshe, you would believe me; because it was about me that he wrote. But if you don't believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say? Indeed, if we don't believe the Torah of Moshe, how will we believe the words of Yeshua? They are the same, only revealed to our understanding, because the veil was lifted. By studying the Torah, our intimate knowledge and revelation of Yeshua grows. Don't stay at the stage of Pesach and salvation by grace; move on to the stage of priesthood! After Pharaoh had let beshalach בְּשַׁלַּח the people go, God did not guide them to the highway that goes through the land of the P'lishtim. Exodus 13:17 Heading for Mount Sinai! Here they are, heading toward their meeting, to their calling and messianic vocation! A longer road with many steps will be necessary in order to know the G-d of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov. As they journey out of Egypt, Pharaoh will send a strong army against the Jewish people and G-d will again perform mind boggling miracles. Fear will grab the Bneh Israel through a lack of assurance concerning their freshly obtained freedom. They are free! Freedom is sometimes hard to perceive. One needs to learn how to walk free; it requires an education and a total change of thinking. Moshe will sing this wonderful song, a part of which is still sealed and won't be revealed before the Messianic era, that will usher in full deliverance and salvation. A prophetic anointing fell on the children of Israel that day, united together in song, as shown in the following verse: Then Moshe and the people of Israel sang (singular and future) in the Hebrew, yashir, יָשִׁיר, a song to Adonai: I will sing to Adonai, for he is highly exalted: the horse and its rider he threw in the sea. Exodus 15:1 The Midrash speaks of fifty miracles being fulfilled at the Red Sea. It was a fantastic adventure and the children of Israel saw and tasted both divine protection and the anointing. They didn't want to leave this shore, the witness of G-d's majesty, but Moshe "had them leave" (Exodus 15:22) the Yam Suf for the desert (Shur), to walk three days towards Marah without water. Marah, the next step: bitterness. The lack of water causes the children of Israel to complain even as they arrive at Marah, where the only available water to drink is bitter and undrinkable. After being set free from slavery, a necessary step in order to serve G-d, the people are tested by their basic needs: thirst and hunger. Since man has lost his position in the Gan Eden, he must provide for his physical needs, and the fear generated by this struggle for life is probably the strongest part in man which stands against obedience to G-d. In the mouth of Yeshua this warning will become a direct commandment: the Feast they are to celebrate won't tolerate any compromise, and their renewal must go through the mastering of this ancestral fear of lacking: No one can be slave to two masters; for he will either hate the first and love the second, or scorn the second and be loyal to the first. You can't be a slave to both God and money. "Therefore, I tell you, don't worry about your life - what you will eat or drink; or about your body - what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing? "So don't be anxious, asking, 'What will we eat?, ''What will we drink?' or 'How will we be clothed?' For it is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need them all. But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:24-25; 31-33 The lack of water symbolically represents their thirst for G-d's Word, a bitter frustration and longing hope. It is to this point that G-d desires to draw His children, to have them long not only for the miracles, but for His presence. They are exhausted, having walked for three days and the undrinkable water brings despair. Instead of praying they complain and G-d will perform yet another sign to have them understand. He is going to "teach" a piece of wood to Moshe, "vayorehu וַיּוֹרֵהוּ" in Hebrew. "I am going to teach you something you ignore. You believe that you must use a sweet plant to make the water drinkable. I am going to show you that I soften the bitter with a bitter wood". G-d will teach Moshe that He can soften bitterness with bitterness and that from the bitter can come the soft and that from a difficult situation will come good: Dear friends, don't regard as strange the fiery ordeal occurring among you to test you, as if something extraordinary were happening to you. Furthermore, we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called in accordance with his purpose. 1 Peter 4:12, Romans 8:28 The people of Israel are on their way to celebrate a Feast for Adonai, and preparation is necessary..." Shalom Fellow Israelite,

Last week's Parasha was called "Bo," a word that most English translations render as "Go." However, "bo" is actually a command form of "come." If I were to ask you to come along with me to go somewhere, I would call out: "Bo!" Perhaps what YHVH was suggesting to Moses, in choosing this particular word here (and in several of the other instances when He sent him to Pharaoh), was that He Himself was going to Pharaoh and wanted His servant to accompany Him. Knowing that YHVH was actually the one addressing Egypt's king would certainly have given Moses a great sense of security.

At that particular encounter, YHVH continued to speak saying: "I have hardened his [Pharaoh's] heart and the hearts of his servants, that I may show these signs of Mine before him" (Exodus 10:1 emphases added). Elohim was telling Moses that although He was taking him along 'for the ride,' everything that was going to take place would be of Him and from Him. Over and over again YHVH reminds His people that He brought them out of Egypt. He never says, "Remember when Moses brought you out of bondage." Through Moses and Aaron YHVH spoke to Pharaoh in first-person: "How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me" (Exodus 10:1 Emphases added).

In that Parasha, as well as in the one for this week, there are very important lessons for us to learn about our own spiritual exodus out of bondage to "sin and death," and how the Father provided a Lamb, so that "light" would shine in our tents while the rest of the world is in tangible (feel-able) darkness.

Along with these two Torah Parashot, we should also study Paul's commentary in Romans chapters 5 and 6, where he explains how YHVH redeemed and saved His people from slavery and bondage to the "kingdom of darkness."

In dealing with this topic Paul's 'argument,' aside from being founded on the intimate knowledge that he had of his Elohim and Messiah, is based upon the Torah laws that govern redemption and were fulfilled in Yeshua's death, burial, and resurrection. Had YHVH not acted sovereignly, there would have been no possibility for man to extricate himself from the bondage to Satan's kingdom. YHVH, through fulfilling the legal requirements for "atonement," enabled mankind to receive the grace to be justified and reconciled to Himself. If it were not for the Torah's instructions, we would not even begin to understand and know the love, mercy, and justice of the Elohim of the Hebrews. The Israelites found grace when YHVH delivered them out of Egypt, as YHVH Himself declares: "Thus says YHVH: 'The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness -- Israel, when I went to give him rest'" (Jeremiah 31:2). The mercy or grace of the Father is always part of His justice.

YHVH's laws are active throughout the Torah, but 'behind the scenes' of those rulings is revealed His heart toward His people; for example, Pharaoh and his firstborn had the power to keep Israel under their authority as long as Israel was in their kingdom. The only way that YHVH could remove their influence was to put Egypt's firstborn to death.

He could have also destined the king to the same fate, but in order for this to remain a legal transaction YHVH had to extract "permission" from him to let His people go. Remember, Joseph needed the consent of his boss in order for his family to have land and property in Egypt. This verbal contract could not be broken without both parties' mutual agreement.

The final execution of YHVH's plan in regards to Pharaoh took place while Israel was hidden under and behind the blood of the lamb (on their doorposts). Thus, as they were receiving grace the law was being fulfilled. Similarly, when Yeshua died on the execution stake, YHVH judicially or legally took away Satan's rights over mankind. "Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it " - in Yeshua's death (Colossians 2:15). YHVH disarmed, that is, removed the principalities and powers' authority to rule and reign over humanity. But then He also had to destroy the armed forces that kept these authorities in power. For the Israelites He accomplished this by having them pass through the Reed Sea in order to annihilate Pharaoh's army in the very same place. The (spiritual) counterpart in our life is water immersion (see Romans chapter 6:3-4). Our acceptance of redemption through the blood of the lamb has to be confirmed by being immersed in water (passing through the proverbial Reed Sea).

When our ancestors did likewise and arrived on the other side, they turned around and watched the waters cover and destroy their enemy's army and then sang the Song of Moses (see Exodus 15: 2-19). Upon emerging out of the water every believer should follow suite, by either singing or reading the same Song. If you have never done this, then this week's Parasha gives you the opportunity to reflect back on your immersion and recount this great and awesome act of the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. "They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: "Great and marvelous are Your works…(Revelation 15:3).

As mentioned in the beginning, these earth shuttering events were not about Moses or Aaron, YHVH's chosen servants for that time, but about bringing glory to Who was and is the Elohim of the Hebrews.

"So YHVH saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Thus Israel saw the great work which YHVH had done in Egypt; so the people feared YHVH, and believed YHVH and His servant Moses" (Exodus 14:30-31).

In regards to the New Covenant "exodus," may we fear YHVH and believe Him and His Servant/Son Yeshua.
