"A nation that dwells alone" (Numbers 23:9) Tammuz 6, 5771/July 8, 2011 We are all familiar with the story of Bilaam, (Numbers 22:2-25:9) the heathen prophet hired by Balak, king of Moav, to place a curse upon the nation of Israel. In fact, even if we never heard or read the Biblical account, the major lines of the story would seem tantalizingly familiar: The delegation of notables sent by Balak to lobby Bilaam, the money being offered in exchange for Bilaam's "diplomatic" services, the fact that these two historically antagonistic nations banded together to engage in open "wordfare," (delegitimization), against Israel, and the theatrical, media savvy way in which Bilaam presented his curses, (reminiscent, perhaps of CNN or Al Jazeera), all could have been lifted from our morning newspaper. Not much has really changed over the millennia.

This week we are reading about Moshe's lack of faith which ended up costing him entrance into the Promised Land.  Now that's a scary thought.  We know Moshe to be a humble man, rich in faith.  Yet, even Moshe was greatly punished for his lack of faith.  Precisely, Moshe did not set YHWH apart (make holy) "in the eyes of the children of Israel" (Bemidbar/Numbers 20:12).  Moshe was involved in the building of a nation to spiritual maturity.  Important work, and something many of you are also involved with.  Even Moshe couldn't make a mistake when it came to the holiness of our Elohim.  We all make mistakes.  But when it comes to the holiness of the Father we MUST walk according to the truth that has been revealed to us.  Our lives and our usefulness to Him may depend on it.

Parshas Balak Micha 5:6 This week's haftorah reveals to us Hashem's incredible love for His people. The prophet Micha opens by comparing the Jewish nation to a lion amongst the beasts. This refers to the Jewish nation's ultimate status in the Messianic era wherein there will be no need to turn to other nations for assistance. They will finally place their full trust in Hashem and recognize that salvation comes solely from Him. Micha continues the Messianic theme by describing Hashem's cleansing process whereby all idolatry and idolatrous cities will be destroyed.

Parshas Balak Forever a Donkey How is it possible for a pompous fool to have the gift of prophecy, to communicate directly with Hashem? This question immediately springs to mind as we read the amazing story of Bilaam in this week’s parshah. Bilaam had immense powers. He could marshal awesome cosmic forces to serve his designs. He could foresee the future all the way to Messianic times. And yet he seems to have been an evil, money-grubbing buffoon ridiculed by his own donkey. How could this be?
