The Most Precious Commodity
A further count of the Jewish people is recorded for us in this week’s parsha. Though the numbers match almost exactly to the count that was reported in the at the beginning of the book of Bamidbar, the Torah nevertheless goes through it again in great detail and with precision. All of the commentators to the Torah have struggled to find meaning in this counting of Israel once again.

Parshas Pinchas
A Single, Eternal Moment
On one hand, the story of Pinchas is straightforward. There was a crisis in the Jewish people, and Pinchas responded to the call, which, given the solution, was not an easy thing to do. He was not a killer, and certainly not one to seek attention. It is very hard for the average person to spill blood, even that of an enemy, so how much more so that of a fellow Jew who happened to be a leader as well. Pinchas really had to push himself to carry through regarding a very difficult halachah that could have had very dire consequences for him:

A Dove Amongst Eagles
"Attack the Midianites and kill them" (25:17)

Rashi points out that Hashem commanded Moshe to decimate the Midianites and not the Moabites, although they were more instrumental than the Midianites in enticing Bnei Yisroel to sin[1]. The Midrash explains that since Ruth, the great grandmother of King David, was destined to descend from Moav, Hashem refrained from destroying them. If, in fact, Moav deserved to be destroyed, why could Hashem not have orchestrated a scenario by which the majority of the nation is killed, but Ruth's existence is assured from the few who survive?

Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

JEREMIAH CHAPTER 29

JEREMIAH'S LETTER TO THE EXILES IN BABYLON

In the previous chapter (Jer. 28) we saw how the false prophet Hananyah ben Azoor was prophesying that the large contingent of exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar had deported to Babylon with King Yeho-yachin would speedily be restored to Jerusalem WITHIN TWO YEARS. Their deportation had surely been a nasty shock, but with Babylon still at the beginning of its ascendancy – they were deported in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign, eighteen years prior to the destruction of the Temple – the recalcitrant establishment priests and false prophets in Jerusalem were able to persuade themselves that the rise of the new superpower would be very short-lived.

Parshas Pinchas
Yirmiyahu 1:1
This week begins a series of haftorah readings which reflect the inner feelings of the Jewish people during their final months of the year. The series consists of moving visions of the prophets depicting the pending Jewish exile and destruction of the Bais Hamikdash and concludes with an ongoing exchange between Hashem and the Jewish people expressing a strong desire for reunification. Our haftorah speaks about the introduction of Yirmiyahu into prophecy and shows him somewhat reluctant to serve as the leading prophet of Israel. Yirmiyahu's concern centered around his youngage coupled with his lack of experience in speaking to an entire nation. He recognized the painful nature of his catastrophic predictions and feared that his prophetic words would actually endanger his own life. Hashem responded that He would personally direct Yirmiyahu and protect him from all opposing forces. Yirmiyahu consented and received his first prophe cy which he described in the following words. "And Hashem sent His hand which touched my mouth and He said to me, 'Behold I've placed my words in your mouth." This unique description of prophecy as "words placed in the mouth", rather than words spoken to the prophet, suggest a strong dimension of force. It seems that Yirmiyahu actually felt compelled to speak his words of prophecy at all costs.

You have the week's Torah without having to print the email. You have the Sfas Emes' text--which could not be sent by email. Also many people who would enjoy the Sfas Emes do not have internet. You can purchase this Sefer at your favorite bokstore, or online, at the Targum or Feldheim websites. Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.

Sfas Emes, Zechuso Tagein Aleinu, Parshas Pinchos, 5631

It helps to see this ma'amar in its historical context. Pinchos had stopped the outburst of aveira (sin), and the ensuing plague. Accordingly, HaShem had promoted Pinchos to the status of full-fledged kohein. The parsha's first Medrash Rabba -- which is the Sfas Emes's starting point -- elaborates on this account.
