What really caused the Temple's destruction?

The Haftorah which is read immediately before the ninth of Av provides deep insight into why the Temple was destroyed. Isaiah mercilessly berates the Jewish people: "Hear the word of the Lord, rulers of Sodom, give ear to the Torah of our God, you people of Gomorrah. To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifice to me? I'm sated with the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of sated beasts... Bring no more vain offerings, incense of abomination they are to me. As for the New Moons, the Sabbaths and the Festivals, I cannot bear iniquity along with your solemn convocations.  Your hands are full of blood... Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes; cease to do evil. Learn to do well; seek justice; relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow..." (Isaiah 1:10-17)

Parshas Devarim & The Three Weeks Appreciation This year, Tisha B’Av is on Shabbos itself, causing the fast day to be pushed off until Sunday. Shabbos is normal, for the most part, at least until Chatzos, the halachic mid-point of the day, at which time some limitations do apply to acknowledge that, if it wasn’t for Shabbos, it would be Tisha B’Av in every respect. It is well known that the Talmud states that if the Temple does not get rebuilt in a particular generation, it is as if it was destroyed in that generation (Ta’anis 29a). That’s quite an incrimination and condemnation of every generation since the destruction itself occurred. After all, it would seem easier to lose what you already have than to get back what has since been lost, especially hundreds, and then thousands of years later. Is the Talmud to be taken literally?

The original Hebrew name of Lamentations is KINOTH, "Mourning Dirges" (see II Chronicles 35:25), but the work is more generally known by the name of EICHAH after the Hebrew word with which chapters 1, 2 and 4 all open, meaning "How???"

Parshas Devarim Shabat Outweighs the Ninth Day of Av This year the Shabat on which parsha of Dvarim is being read publicly in the synagogue is itself the ninth day of Av. There are differing customs as to how to treat this Shabat and whether any restrictions whatsoever should pertain to our usual Shabat pleasures and enjoyment. Even though the prevailing custom is to treat this Shabat in the usual and normal fashion, the parsha of Dvarim all by itself is sufficient warning to sober our attitudes.

Menachem Av 5, 5772 · July 24, 2012 Editor's Note: When I think of summer, I think of parks, ice pops, beaches, vacations, swimming pools, barbecues, sprinklers, music, day trips and lots of happy children. And much of the Northern Hemisphere is enjoying all that right now. We were too—until recently. Smack in the middle of the summer, we mark the saddest period of time on the Jewish calendar. We remember the destruction of the Holy Temples and the subsequent exile in which we still remain. We limit our fun, our eating and our grooming. We are in mourning. This seems to be a recurrent theme in Jewish life. When a couple marries, the groom breaks a glass under the wedding canopy to remind us of the Destruction. When building a new home, many leave a patch unfinished, again to remind us of Jerusalem's ruin. Perhaps the message is, "As good as it seems, don't get too comfortable. Our bodies may be okay, but our Jewish souls are horribly misplaced. We belong in Jerusalem, at home, at peace and at one." With the 9th of Av right around the corner, let's remember why we're here and where we wish to go. If we add just one more mitzvah to our daily doings, perhaps we'll finally get there.
