Parshas Netzavim Yeshaya 61:10 This week's haftorah marks the climax of a seven week series of reflection on Jewish redemption. In this final presentation, Hashem announces His personal return to the Jewish people. Now that every other dimension of redemption is in place, the time has finally arrived for Hashem to rest His Divine Presence amongst His people. Eretz Yisroel has been revived,Yerushalayim has been rebuilt, the exiles have returned en masse, but the ultimate objective has yet to be seen. In response to this, the prophet Yeshaya quotes the Jewish people saying, "I will be gladdened by Hashem, My soul will rejoice over My G-d." (61,10) Chazal in Yalkut Shimoni (505) view the Jewish people's response to be specifically related to the return of Hashem to Yerushalayim. The Jewish people respond to all the magnificent prophecies of their glorious future and proclaim that their true source of happiness is but one, the return of Hashem to His beloved pe ople. They sorely long for the privilege of sensing the presence of Hashem amongst them and feeling the closeness and love He has for His people. They resolve that they will be gladdened and happy only through His return to them.

Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.   Parshas Netzavim Netzavim, 5361 In Parshas Netzavim (Devarim, 30: 21), Moshe Rabbeinu tells us: "Lo ba'shama'yim hi ..." ("The Torah is not high up in the heavens", and therefore, presumably inaccessible. Rather (Devarim, 30:14), "ka'rov ha'davar ei'lecha me'od" ("the Torah is easily within our grasp"). Knowing that the Torah is easily within our grasp is a cheering thought. But the Sfas Emes (echoing the Chidushei HaRim) adds a powerful qualifying condition: This easy access to the Torah applies only to a person who yearns for Torah with his whole heart. That is, we are talking here about a person who is attached (emotionally and spiritually) to the Torah. So attached that if, in fact, it were necessary to go up to the heavens to gain access to Torah, he would try to do so.

Rosh Hashana and the Kiss of Life The Torah calls the day of Rosh Hashana "a day of blowing" which signifies the pivotal importance of the shofar to the Day of Judgment. The shofar is the seminal mitzvah around which everything else evolves. This is somewhat baffling. Against the awesomeness of the Day of Judgment, the shofar would seem to be a minor ritual. Why then the special status and fanfare attached to it? The commentaries tell us that the shofar calls to mind the story of the akeida in which our patriarch Avraham, after attempting to fulfill Hashem's request to offer up his beloved Isaac as a sacrifice, found an alternate way to give expression to his overflowing love of his Creator.

Parshas Netzavim Our Leaders Define Us "You are standing today, all of you..." (29:9) Parshas Nitzavim begins with Moshe assembling the entire nation of Israel on the last day of his life. The verse divides Bnei Yisroel into distinct segments and social classes; the first to be mentioned are "Rosheichem" - the political leaders. Why are they named prior to "Zikneichem" - the spiritual leaders of the nation? After "Rosheichem", the verse mentions "Shivteichem" - "your tribes". Rashi explains that "your tribes" should not be interpreted as a separate segment, rather as "Rosheichem le'shivteichem" - "the leaders of your tribes1". If the expressions "Rosheichem" and "Shivteichem" are connected, why does the Torah not insert the preposition "le" - "of" to make the interpretation clearer? Without the "le" which defines the leaders as a function of the tribes, the verse can be understood as "your leaders who are your tribes", i.e. the tribes are constituted solely of leaders.

The Whole Year! Rosh Hashana is almost here! I even saw it on my Staples desk calendar. Only someone living in a cave does not know that something is about to happen! What is it that’s about to happen? Yeah! Rosh Hashana! But what happens on Rosh Hashana? Ahhhh! That’s the rub!

Parshas Netzavim Closer Than You Think 1 For this mitzvah that I command you today – it is not hidden from you and it is not remote…It is something very close to you. It is in your mouth and in your heart – to perform it. It would be convenient to assume that these psukim are meant to deliver a “Yes we can!” message to those who might think it humanly impossible to live by the Law. Understanding that people might think that the Torah places on onerous burden on our shoulders, the Torah might pause to reassure us that observing its demands is eminently doable.

ISAIAH CHAPTER 35

"The wilderness and the arid land shall rejoice…" (v 1). This very beautiful prophecy of the future glory of Israel and Jerusalem comes as the conclusion of Isaiah's lengthy series of prophecies about the coming downfall of the nations, before leading into the narrative portion of the book telling of Sennacherib's abortive siege of Jerusalem, his downfall and the events that followed (chs 36-39).

The present prophecy of how the "wilderness" will burst into blossom comes in contrast to the prophecy in the previous chapter (ch 34) about the utter devastation that will befall Edom in the end of days. "We may interpret the 'wilderness' and the 'arid land' as referring to the Land of Israel, which was like a wilderness from the day Israel went into exile from there, but now, with the destruction of the land of Edom, Israel will rejoice and be glad, for with the destruction of Edom, Israel will be restored" (RaDaK on v 1).
