VEYEILECH - THE TRANSMISSON OF THE TORAH

With the Torah almost complete except for the concluding Song (HA'AZINU) and Moses' Blessings (VE-ZOS HABRACHAH), it was necessary to ensure the transmission of authority from Moses to his divinely-appointed successor, Joshua and the transmission of the Torah to the nation as a whole and to all the later generations.

Parshas VEYEILECH describes how the leadership of Israel was transferred to Joshua in the eyes of all Israel in order to give him perfect legitimacy after Moses would be gone. Having instructed Joshua to be strong and courageous in leading the people into the Land, Moses wrote the Torah and gave it to the Cohen-Priests and the Elders of Israel. (According to tradition, on the last day of his life, Moses wrote the Torah scroll that was to be kept in the Sanctuary as well as a Torah scroll for each of the Twelve Tribes, a total of thirteen scrolls.)

ISAIAH CHAPTER 39

King Hezekiah sang over his own delivery from the very threshold of death (chapter 38 vv 9-20), but he did not lead his nation in song over Jerusalem's miraculous delivery from the clutches of Sennacherib. Had Hezekiah followed the example of Moses and Israel, who sang to God after the overthrow of the Egyptians at the Red Sea, he might have instilled in his people such faith in the Almighty's absolute power over all things that the final redemption would have come and the knowledge of God would have spread to all the nations, and then Hezekiah would have been Melech HaMashiach. Our rabbis saw his failure to sing over Sennacherib's overthrow as a fatal flaw (Sanhedrin 94a; see KNOW YOUR BIBLE commentary on Isaiah 9:6) and our present chapter, Isaiah 39, traces the tragic sequel to the delivery of Jerusalem and Hezekiah's miraculous recovery from mortal illness, in which his subsequent lack of discretion sealed the fate of the First Temple and of Judah. For despite the present respite, in only a few generations the Temple would be destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar, who would take the king and all the people into exile.

ISAIAH CHAPTER 37

On hearing his ministers' report about Ravshakeh's blasphemies, Hezekiah was obliged to rend his garments (Rambam, Laws of Idolatry 2:8). It is a sign of his loyalty to the path of King David that in the face of the Assyrian threat, Hezekiah immediately sent messengers to the prophet in order to know what to do.

Parshas Netzavim Yeshaya 61:10 This week's haftorah marks the climax of a seven week series of reflection on Jewish redemption. In this final presentation, Hashem announces His personal return to the Jewish people. Now that every other dimension of redemption is in place, the time has finally arrived for Hashem to rest His Divine Presence amongst His people. Eretz Yisroel has been revived,Yerushalayim has been rebuilt, the exiles have returned en masse, but the ultimate objective has yet to be seen. In response to this, the prophet Yeshaya quotes the Jewish people saying, "I will be gladdened by Hashem, My soul will rejoice over My G-d." (61,10) Chazal in Yalkut Shimoni (505) view the Jewish people's response to be specifically related to the return of Hashem to Yerushalayim. The Jewish people respond to all the magnificent prophecies of their glorious future and proclaim that their true source of happiness is but one, the return of Hashem to His beloved pe ople. They sorely long for the privilege of sensing the presence of Hashem amongst them and feeling the closeness and love He has for His people. They resolve that they will be gladdened and happy only through His return to them.

Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.   Parshas Netzavim Netzavim, 5361 In Parshas Netzavim (Devarim, 30: 21), Moshe Rabbeinu tells us: "Lo ba'shama'yim hi ..." ("The Torah is not high up in the heavens", and therefore, presumably inaccessible. Rather (Devarim, 30:14), "ka'rov ha'davar ei'lecha me'od" ("the Torah is easily within our grasp"). Knowing that the Torah is easily within our grasp is a cheering thought. But the Sfas Emes (echoing the Chidushei HaRim) adds a powerful qualifying condition: This easy access to the Torah applies only to a person who yearns for Torah with his whole heart. That is, we are talking here about a person who is attached (emotionally and spiritually) to the Torah. So attached that if, in fact, it were necessary to go up to the heavens to gain access to Torah, he would try to do so.

Rosh Hashana and the Kiss of Life The Torah calls the day of Rosh Hashana "a day of blowing" which signifies the pivotal importance of the shofar to the Day of Judgment. The shofar is the seminal mitzvah around which everything else evolves. This is somewhat baffling. Against the awesomeness of the Day of Judgment, the shofar would seem to be a minor ritual. Why then the special status and fanfare attached to it? The commentaries tell us that the shofar calls to mind the story of the akeida in which our patriarch Avraham, after attempting to fulfill Hashem's request to offer up his beloved Isaac as a sacrifice, found an alternate way to give expression to his overflowing love of his Creator.
