Introduction As we have seen repeatedly, both names and the act of naming have great power. A name carries within it something of the essence – from the Latin esse/to be – the core being of the person, place, animal, or thing named. Significantly, even the names by which God is known are linked to the essential nature of the Eternal (in both senses of the word essential). The revealed name of God –yud–hey–vav–hey, Yahweh – contains within it the verb root for “to be,” hey–yud–hey.
