The Community of Torah
God’s people are to be a community rather than a collection of individuals. God did not want a spiritual army of lone rangers. Sometimes people may appear as spiritual lone rangers but they are not. They may have legitimate reasons.
Hindrances to participating in a community: None available – internet community No safe one available – “The subtle power of spiritual abuse” book by Dave Johnson Spiritual abuse occurs when a leader uses their spiritual position to control or dominate another person. Power is used to bolster the position or needs of the leader over the one who comes to them in need. The people can also spiritually abuse their leaders as well. Also just because a leader and a congregant doesn’t get along doesn’t mean there is spiritual abuse going on in either direction. God always wanted community where torah could be lived out. Torah was given to a community. Ex 24:3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do. Many of the torah’s teachings can only be fulfilled in the context of community rather than individually. Court systems, emancipating people in debt, the festivals or sacred assemblies, and there is a special presence of God in the midst of a community of believers that is not realized by the individual. Ps 82:1 God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; Names of the believing community: “Called Out” Community Ge 1:2,3 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Ex 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. hlhq kehilah – Greek word is ecclesia Ex 14:19,20 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. 1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: De 14:2 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth. De 26:18 And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; Ex 19:5,6 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. Holy Community Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. De 33:3,4 Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words. Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob. Ps 149:1 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. We need to see the continuity of the called out holy ones of the Tanakh and the called out holy ones of the Brit Chadashah. There are not two called out communities or two holy ones but one continuous community. Redeemed Community Ancient Israel was redeemed from physical slavery to Egypt by the blood of the Lamb. So the people of God are redeemed from spiritual slavery to sin by the blood of the Lamb. There were always those Jews who were both physically and spiritually redeemed. There have always been Gentiles who were spiritually redeemed. Covenant Community They are people who are in covenant with God. That is the essence of Torah. By accepting the covenant Israel agreed to trat each other in accordance with the stipulations of the covenant. Both the tanakh and the Brit chadfashah define what it means for God’s people to live in a covenant relationship with each other. Torah Community In other words a teaching community. They taught the Word of God. Characteristics of the Believing Community or Torah Community They are people of the Book – they study, teach and live the Bible Many of the top selling christian books are fictional or about spiritual experiences and feelings. Ezr 7:10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the torah of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments. The Bible is not sufficiently studied unless it results in changed behavior. The torah community is organized Ex 18:20,21 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: Able men: I Tim 3 and Titus 1 “able to teach” Fear God: hary Pr 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
