WEEKLY TORAH READINGS
21 April-26 May 2012
For
the coming weeks until Shabbat 19 May a different Torah portion will be
read in the Diaspora from the portion read in Israel. This is because
on Shabbat 14 April Israel returned to the weekly Torah reading, while
in the Diaspora that Shabbat was the Eighth day of Pesach with its own
special Torah reading, leaving the Diaspora one week behind Israel in
the usual annual cycle of readings.

Friday 20 April / 28 Nissan
Today
is the anniversary of the collapse of the walls of Jericho in the time
of Joshua marking the beginning of the conquest of the Land of Israel.
It is good to devote special attention to the thrice-daily repeated
Aleinu prayer, which was composed by Joshua after that miracle in the
form of a backwards acrostic on his name. The recital of Alenu is a segulah (propitious remedy) against all troubles.
Shabbat Friday night-Saturday 20-21 April / 29 Nissan
Torah reading: Israel: TAZRIA-METZORA; Diaspora: SHEMINI
Shabbat Mevarchim & Eve of Rosh Chodesh
After the Shabbat morning Torah reading we bless the coming month of Iyar. The Molad
(junction of the sun and the moon) is on Shabbat 21 April at 10:17
& 3 chalakim a.m. Rosh Chodesh is on Saturday night, Sunday and
Monday 21-23 April.
Pirkey Avot:
On each of the six Shabbatot from today until before the festival of
Shavuot celebrating the giving of the Torah, it is customary to recite
one of the six chapters of the Mishnaic tractate Pirkey Avot containing
the ethical wisdom of the sages, because Derech Eretz ("the way of the earth", good manners) is the foundation of the Torah. Today we begin with Chapter One.
Saturday night-Sunday 21-22 April / 30 Nissan
Rosh Chodesh Iyar First Day
Add Ya'aleh Veyavo
in evening, morning and afternoon prayers and in Grace after Meals.
Following the morning Shacharit prayer, "half" Hallel and the additional
Musaf prayer are recited. On Rosh Chodesh it is customary to eat a
festive meal with bread.
Today is the Yahrzeit of Rabbi Chaim Vital (1543-1620), leading student of Kabbalistic giant R. Yitzchak Luria ("ARI") and chief expositor of his system in the Tree of Life, Eight Gates etc.
Attributes of the month of Iyar: Ruling permutation of the letters of HAVAYAH: YOD KEH KEH VAV, contained in the initial Hebrew letters of Yithalel Hamithalel Haskeil Veyado'a -- "Let him that glories [glory in this, that] he knows and understands [Me]" (Jeremiah 9:23).
The month's corresponding Letter is: VAV; Human attribute: THOUGHT; Body Part: RIGHT KIDNEY; Tribe: ISSACHAR; Constellation: SHOR (Taurus, the Ox).
The month of Iyar
is particularly conducive to deep contemplation and understanding. It
is also conducive to healing since all the sick among the Children of
Israel who left Egypt were completely healed in this period in
preparation for the Giving of the Torah. Thus the Hebrew name of the
month of Iyar is made up of the letters Aleph-Yud-Reish, the initial letters of the Hebrew words Ani YKVK Rophecha, "I HaShem am your Healer" (Exodus 15:26).

Sunday night-Monday 22-23 April / 1 Iyar
Rosh Chodesh Iyar Second Day
Add Ya'aleh Veyavo
in evening, morning and afternoon prayers and in Grace after Meals.
Following the morning Shacharit prayer, "half" Hallel and the additional
Musaf prayer are recited. On Rosh Chodesh it is customary to eat a
festive meal with bread.
Today is the anniversary of Moses' count of the Children of Israel in the Wilderness (Numbers 1:1) and the beginning of the building of King Solomon's Temple.
All
medicines come from the earth. Therefore during the season when the
earth gives forth her bounty and puts strength into all the trees and
plants, i.e. during the month of Iyar when the fruits ripen, all
medicinal plants have greater power, because the earth then puts
strength into them. However at other times, even if one were to take
exactly the same medicines, they would not have the same power. This is
why people take medicines in the month of Iyar - May.
