"And Yaakov was left alone"

(Genesis 32:25)
Kislev 11, 5772/December 9, 2011

On the eve of his reentry into the land of Israel, Yaakov avinu, (Jacob our forefather), finds himself alone. In this state of nighttime solitude he wrestles with a man until "the break of dawn." (Genesis 32:25) The two struggle throughout the night and as the morning light begins to appear, and as it becomes clear that Yaakov's mysterious interlocutor neither can prevail over Yaakov, nor can he linger past the dawn, he tellsYaakov, "'Your name shall no longer be called Yaakov, but Israel, because you have commanding power with [an angel of] G-d and with men, and you have prevailed.'" (ibid 32:29)

Yaakov avinu's (our forefather Jacob's) midnight encounter with a mysterious angel: Who was this angel, what was his purpose, and by what name was he known? Yaakov overcomes the angel, and by doing so gains insight into all these questions. He also acquires for himself a new name, a new identity, and a new role to play in establishing the Divine presence here on this earth.

Shalom Chaverim!

This week in our parasha, Ya'acov (Jacob) agrees to work seven years in exchange for Rachel.  The Torah has an interesting way of describing the waiting process:

Bereshith 29:20 So Ya'acov served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her.

General Overview:

In this week's reading, Toldot, Jacob and Esau are born. Isaac relocates to Philistine where he digs wells, resulting in friction between him and the locals. Rebecca and Jacob successfully deceive Isaac, tricking him into giving to Jacob the blessings he had intended for Esau.
