In our parsha the spiritual-minded Yaakov, who was described by the Torah as "a scholarly "tent dweller" was forced to leave his home and birthplace to go to Haran. According to tradition, Yaakov stopped on his way to study Torah in the beit midrash of Shem and Ever. Then, in Haran he faced some difficult situations that would appear to be out of the league of such a delicate personality.

A New Role

And it was in the morning, and behold it was Leah!" (29:25)

According to the Talmud, Yaakov gave Rachel a secret message that would identify her on their marriage night. He did this in order to prevent Lavan from substituting Leah for Rachel. When Rachel realized that Leah would be publicly humiliated if she could not give Yaakov the message, Rachel revealed the secret words to her.[1] The Daas Zekainim cites a Midrash which says that in the morning, when Yaakov realized that the woman with him was Leah and not Rachel, he asked her, "Why have you tricked me into believing that you were Rachel?" Leah responded, "It is from you that I learned to do so. Did you not pose as your brother in order to receive the blessings?"[2] How do Yaakov's actions substantiate Leah's?

Shalom and Welcome To Everyone Who Is New To The Group!

Vayeitzei! - This Shabbat, Friday December 2, 2011, the Torah portion is Parashat Vayeitzei which extends from Genesis 28:10 - 32:2.  The Haftarah reading is Hosea 12:12 - 14:10 (Ashkenazic) or 11:7 - 12:12 (Sephardic).  You can download the lesson as a PDF file, WORD file or as a PDF Children's Lesson.  The Haftarah Connections Lectures for Parashat Chayei Sarah and Toldot will be uploaded soon.  I'm getting more and more excited about the Haftarah lectures and what Adonai is showing me through them as I make an effort to really study them thoroughly.  Join us when you can on YouTube.  I have enjoined the help of my two younger sons who love video editing, so it's my hope to present more video content this Torah cycle, so keep your eyes open.  Also, there are two great audio-Visual teachings on the Messianic Think Tank web page (see link below) for Toldot and Vayeitzei!
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and . . . I really look forward to Chanukah and hope that you are blessed by its celebration as you read about its events and possibly join in with Chanukah celebrations near where you live.

Editor's Note:

For the past few weeks, we've been living with our great-great-great-grandparents. Every year, these Torah portions allow us to connect with the common denominator of the Jewish people. No matter what our differences, we are all children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
But then something funny happens: We split up into 12 parts. This week's portion tells of the births of 11 of Jacob's 12 sons, future fathers of the 12 tribes of Israel. This 12-way split sticks with us throughout our history. We traveled through the desert grouped by tribes. When we entered the land of Israel, it was divided according to tribe. Jewish mysticism even suggests that the various Jewish liturgical traditions are actually distinct pathways through which each tribe connects to G‑d.
So which is it? Are we one, or are we many? Does our Jewish identity demand conformity, or does it foster individuality? Are we a single cohesive unit, or are we a collection of unique souls with different routes to G‑d? Of course, the answer is "both." Each one of us is Abraham, and at the same time, we are Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Joseph and Benjamin. Or in my case, Dovid.
Have a great week!

Parshas Vayeitzei
Hoshea 12:13 - 14:10

This week's haftorah is devoted to the Jewish nation's severe plunge into idolatry. The Judean kingdom ultimately succumbed to the rampant practices of the Samaritan kingdom and engaged itself in foreign worship. This abhorrent conduct traced back to the days of Yeravam ben N'vat, the first Samaritan king. Shlomo Hamelech relied upon his unprecedented sound wisdom and permitted himself to marry women of alien descent and culture. He undoubtedly intended to eradicate from them every trace of their previous environment. However, he was unsuccessful in this and his idolatrous wives threatened to corrupt the entire Jewish nation. Hashem responded to this deteriorating situation and pledged to remove most of the Jewish kingdom from the royal Davidic dynasty. (see M'lochim 1 11:4-13) Hashem sent the prophet Achiya to inform Yeravam he would lead ten of the tribes and Shlomo's son, Rechavam would lead the remaining tribes of Yehuda a nd Binyomin.

The weekly Sfas Emes is now available in a Sefer. The Seferis called Emes Ve'emunah : A Sfas Emes Companion. This Sefer contains all of the materials in the weekly emails, plus new insights. The Sefer also contains the text in lashon hakodesh on which the Sfas Emes worked to produce his ma'amar. Accessing the the Sfas Emes via the Sefer offers advantages. You have the week's Torah without having to print the email. You have the Sfas Emes' text--which could not be sent by email. Also many people who would enjoy the Sfas Emes do not have internet. You can purchase this Sefer at your favorite bokstore, or online, at the Targum or Feldheim websites. Emes Ve'Emunah will also be available for purchase or perusal at the SOY Seform Sale, January 15-January 24.

Parshas Vayeitzei
Sfas Emes, Zechuso Tagein Aleinu, Vayeitzei, 5632

The parsha begins: "Vayeitzei Ya'akov miBe'eir Sheva, vayeileich Charana." (ArtScroll: "Jacob departed from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.") ArtScroll is presenting the pshat -- the simple/plain/surface reading -- of this posuk. I urge you to take a good look at this pshat reading. Why? Because once you have seen the Sfas Emes's non-pshat interpretation of this posuk, you will likely never again understand this posuk exclusively in a pshat mode (or, for that matter, in a drash mode -- i.e., a la Rashi) the same way.
