The Telltale Sign

(Or A Portrait of Two Women)

Appearances can be deceiving. It is possible for two people to behave in exactly the same fashion, yet one is a hero and the other a scoundrel. What sets the two apart is motivation. The same act can be performed for selfish reasons or for the highest altruistic ideals, and it is the intent behind the act which determines its nature.

http://www.healthwatchman.com This week's Torah Parashah, Genesis 37:1-40:23, talks about Joseph. Of all the men found in scripture I believe Joseph was one of the strongest and wisest because he was able to resist the temptation of Potifar's wife. Check out this in this video about this topic.

The Roots of Strength

Yiddishe nachas - two words so full of Jewish meaning that they defy translation into any other language. Yiddishe nachas is that special blend of pride, joy and satisfaction that Jewish parents feel when they look at their successful children and remember all the effort that went into them. It is a sigh and a smile grafted together.

Editor's Note:

Man, were we charged—4,500 of us packed into that huge pier-warehouse-outfitted-as-giant-ballroom. We were at a banquet of astronomical proportions, the culmination of three days of nonstop workshops, mentoring and tip-sharing.
After roll-call, country by country throughout the entire globe, everyone is standing, the band strikes up, and some 4,500 rabbis and guests transmogrify into a single churning mass of hyper-adrenalized, turbo-charged joy. I saw two rabbis who barely knew each other grab one another, and dance and celebrate as eternal friends.
I'm talking about the annual international convention of Chabad Shluchim. "Shluchim" means agents—basically, those out in the field doing the work the Rebbe charged us all with: Wake up Jews! Connect them with one another! Connect them with G-d and their holy heritage! Change the world!
There are many sorts of conventions in the Jewish world. Some get together to put out fires—to deal with all the pressing, urgent matters of the Jewish global shtetl. Others get together to build fires as well—bonfires around which our brothers and sisters will gather and warm their hearts. Fires of joy. Fires of love.
And man, were we on fire.

Editor's Note:

For the past few weeks, we've been living with our great-great-great-grandparents. Every year, these Torah portions allow us to connect with the common denominator of the Jewish people. No matter what our differences, we are all children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
But then something funny happens: We split up into 12 parts. This week's portion tells of the births of 11 of Jacob's 12 sons, future fathers of the 12 tribes of Israel. This 12-way split sticks with us throughout our history. We traveled through the desert grouped by tribes. When we entered the land of Israel, it was divided according to tribe. Jewish mysticism even suggests that the various Jewish liturgical traditions are actually distinct pathways through which each tribe connects to G‑d.
So which is it? Are we one, or are we many? Does our Jewish identity demand conformity, or does it foster individuality? Are we a single cohesive unit, or are we a collection of unique souls with different routes to G‑d? Of course, the answer is "both." Each one of us is Abraham, and at the same time, we are Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Joseph and Benjamin. Or in my case, Dovid.
Have a great week!

Hoshea 12:13 - 14:10

This week's haftorah is devoted to the Jewish nation's severe plunge into idolatry. The Judean kingdom ultimately succumbed to the rampant practices of the Samaritan kingdom and engaged itself in foreign worship. This abhorrent conduct traced back to the days of Yeravam ben N'vat, the first Samaritan king. Shlomo Hamelech relied upon his unprecedented sound wisdom and permitted himself to marry women of alien descent and culture. He undoubtedly intended to eradicate from them every trace of their previous environment. However, he was unsuccessful in this and his idolatrous wives threatened to corrupt the entire Jewish nation. Hashem responded to this deteriorating situation and pledged to remove most of the Jewish kingdom from the royal Davidic dynasty. (see M'lochim 1 11:4-13) Hashem sent the prophet Achiya to inform Yeravam he would lead ten of the tribes and Shlomo's son, Rechavam would lead the remaining tribes of Yehuda a nd Binyomin.

CAN THESE BONES LIVE?

One of the fascinating areas of research which has opened up many new doors of Torah understanding and insight is that of archeology. This field, relatively new and, in its finest hours, painstaking and rigorous of method, has found the Near East to be the most bountiful of areas for its own research. The many digs in Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Syria and throughout the Middle East have uncovered virtual treasure troves of evidence linking our present to our past. The most notable example, one which deserves far more than the passing mention it will get here, is the momentous find of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 in the series of caves known as Qumran. Our understanding of the religious schisms affecting the Judean community in the last two centuries before the common era has been enhanced hundredsfold as a result of the Scrolls - and countless puzzling passages throughout Rabbinic literature have become clarified as well.

Dear Haverim,

This is an early version of an essay that later was included in my first volume - Between the Lines of the Bible. The second volume will be published by Urim Press and O-U Press within the next few weeks.

THE PROBLEM

Parashat Hayyey Sarah tells two stories; undoubtedly, the more popular (and lengthy) narrative is that of Avraham's slave and his mission to Aram to find a wife for Yitzhak. In last year's shiur (available on the Mikra home page: torah.org/advanced/mikra), I suggested an approach to understanding the nature of Avraham's directive. We will, with God's help, return to this fascinating and engaging story in future years.
