They are among the most stirring words in the Torah. In vermilion verse, Moses calls upon heaven and earth to bear witness to the poetic image he is about to conjure of Hashem's awesome majesty and His special relationship with the Jewish people. The Song of Moses, which we read in this week's portion, is a stunning paean characterized by sharp rebuke but also glorious hope.

Providence, Justified and Explained1
The Tzur – perfect is His work. All his ways are justice.

Tzur is usually translated as “Rock,” signifying the strength and permanence of G-d. The word can also be seen, however, as related to yotzer, depicting Hashem as the Creator of everything. This would be attractive, because misunderstanding of Hashem’s providential justice often stems from failing to appreciate His role as Creator.

I know what they will do by how they behave right now, even before they enter the land I promised to them. (Devarim 31:21)

Of the many things that we said on Rosh Hashanah, these verses are from the section of the Mussaf Prayer called Zichronos—Rememberings:

Praiseworthy is the man who does not forget You, the human being who takes strength in You, for those who seek You will never stumble nor will those who take refuge in You ever be humiliated.

BS"D KNOW YOUR BIBLE: Isaiah 53-54
Study Notes by Avraham ben Yaakov

ISAIAH CHAPTER 53

THE SUFFERING SERVANT

The present chapter is famous for its depiction of God's tormented servant, reviled and persecuted by those around him, for whose sins he atones through his illness and suffering.

"Who would have believed our report…?" (v 1). All of our classical Bible commentators are agreed that these are the words with which the astonished nations of the world will express their amazement when they see the future greatness and glory of Israel as they will be revealed at the time of the redemption (see Rashi, Metzudas David and RaDaK on v 1). The prophecy in our present chapter thus flows naturally from the closing words of the previous chapter describing the wonderment of the nations in time to come when they will see Israel's ascent from such depths (Is. 52:14-15).
