Winter coats, hats and scarves have become part of life again, and there is snow in the forecast. There is something magical about the first snowfall. The grungy streets and tired postwar buildings turn beautiful under its sparkling blanket. After a few hours, traffic will reduce it to muddy slush, and the magic will be marred. But for the first few moments, in the early morning hush, I will walk with fresh snow crunching under my feet, crisp and pristine. Even the drab concrete and brick urban sprawl turns beautiful then. We all have parts of our life that are not pretty. Real issues that need to be dealt with. At the same time, we can never forget that everything has beauty when viewed positively. Every home is a castle under the forgiving shower of sparkling snow. For now, draw back the shades, take a look at the falling snow (or the palm trees, if that what you are blessed with), print up an article or two from the fantastic offerings below, and savor the moment.

This seemingly casual observation is actually a matter of great importance. For one thing, this comment implies that the Sfas Emes could imagine a world without time. Such a mental feat of imagination is beyond the capacity of most of us. (Thus, for example, I have the impression that even so imaginative a literature as Science Fiction has not had the capacity to work with worlds without time.) And note the Sfas Emes' immediate reaction to the fact we live in a world with time. He views the existence of time as a manifestation of HaShem's Presence. Here is another example of the Sfas Emes's capacity to see HaShem everywhere.

V THE "TEIVAH" EFFECT As several commentators have pointed out, the timing scheme in the flood narrative is arranged in a chiasmus, as follows: A (7 days): " 'Come you and all your house into the ark; for you have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Of every clean beast you shall take to you seven pairs, the male and his female; and of beasts that are not clean one pair, the male and his female. Of birds also of the air by seven pairs, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. For in another seven days I will cause it to rain upon the earth.' " (7:1-4,10)

Parshas Noach Taking the Initiative For the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth. (Bereishis 8:21) That from the Creator of man Himself, which pretty much dictates the direction of history from that point onward. And, even as priceless as teshuvah may be to God, as mentioned last week, still, once has to wonder why God even bothered to start again with Noach’s family.
