"I entreated HaShem"

(Deuteronomy 3:23)
Av 12, 5771/August 12, 2011

This week's Torah reading, Va'Etchanan, opens as Moshe explains to his people that he has been pleading to G-d to have his decree of no-entry-into-the-Land-of-Israel rescinded. All he asks for is to "cross over and see the good land that is on the other side of the Jordan, this good mountain and the Lebanon."

"These are the journeys of the children of Israel"
(Numbers 33:1)
Tammuz 27, 5771/July 29, 2011

Cheshbon nefesh, literally, "accounting of the soul," or as we say in English, stocktakingor soul searching, is an essential component of the spiritual and ethical life that Torah sets out before us. In fact, it is of such a high priority that it is G-d Himself who instructs Moses to record Israel's desert peregrinations: "Moses recorded their starting points for their journeys according to the word of HaShem, and these were their journeys with their starting points." (ibid 33:2)

The Jewish national period of mourning.
The 9 Days of the month of Av begin Monday, August 1,
through the Fast of Tisha B'Av, Tuesday, August 9, 2011 -
a period of national mourning, during which we focus on
disasters that befell the Jewish People throughout history.
Tisha B'Av and the 3 Weeks
The "Three Weeks" between the 17th of Tammuz and the Tisha B'Av have historically been days of misfortune and calamity for the Jewish people. During this time, both the First and Second Temples were destroyed, amongst other tragedies.
