Vayeishev! - This Shabbat, Friday December 16, 2011, the Torah portion will be Parashat Vayeishev which extends from Genesis 37:1 - 40:23.  The Haftarah reading is Amos 2:6 - 3:8.  You can download the lesson as a PDF file, WORD file or as a PDF Children's Lesson.  Here is the Torah portion a few days early for those of you needing to prepare.  I used to send this about five days in advance so that you would have it to prepare for Shabbat, but then I got busy and kept forgetting.  So, I shall endeavor to send these out a little earlier for you.

The Telltale Sign

(Or A Portrait of Two Women)

Appearances can be deceiving. It is possible for two people to behave in exactly the same fashion, yet one is a hero and the other a scoundrel. What sets the two apart is motivation. The same act can be performed for selfish reasons or for the highest altruistic ideals, and it is the intent behind the act which determines its nature.

http://www.healthwatchman.com This week's Torah Parashah, Genesis 37:1-40:23, talks about Joseph. Of all the men found in scripture I believe Joseph was one of the strongest and wisest because he was able to resist the temptation of Potifar's wife. Check out this in this video about this topic.

The Torah relates two instances in which Yaakov's name is changed to Yisrael. The first is after the struggle between Yaakov and Esav's angel (according to the Midrash that "the man" is Esav's guardian angel). "He said to him, 'what is your name?' and he said, 'Yaakov.' And he said, 'No longer shall you be called Yaakov, but Yisrael, for you have contended with Elokim and with men and have prevailed.'" (32:28-29).
The second time it is Hashem who changes Yaakov's name. "Elokim said to him, 'Your name is Yaakov; your name shall no longer be Yaakov, but Yisrael shall be your name, and He named him Yisrael." (35:10).

"And Yaakov was left alone"

(Genesis 32:25)
Kislev 11, 5772/December 9, 2011

On the eve of his reentry into the land of Israel, Yaakov avinu, (Jacob our forefather), finds himself alone. In this state of nighttime solitude he wrestles with a man until "the break of dawn." (Genesis 32:25) The two struggle throughout the night and as the morning light begins to appear, and as it becomes clear that Yaakov's mysterious interlocutor neither can prevail over Yaakov, nor can he linger past the dawn, he tellsYaakov, "'Your name shall no longer be called Yaakov, but Israel, because you have commanding power with [an angel of] G-d and with men, and you have prevailed.'" (ibid 32:29)

Parshas Vayishlach
Ovadia

This week's haftorah reveals to us the true nature of Edom, descendents of Eisav, and displays her two-sided character. It teaches us to recognize Edom's perpetual hatred for the Jewish people and never to trust her friendship. Although there may be moments when Edom displays true brotherhood we must always be wary of these situations and never establish any close association with her.
